    Barry Pender motors are apparently gone out of business, staff were told last night at 5.00 to go home and not come back. Sad to see another business close, especially one thats been around so long.

    Yes it is..also Ford in sandyford(applegreens) is closed as well...

    Had disregarded the post that I had said youngs on the Waterford road lost the opel dealership, being that I can't back it up...

    No need to disregard the post as it's common knowledge in the trade.

    Audi gone from Laharts also. Audi are consolidating into 5 or 6 "Regional Centres" around the country.

    There will no franchises left in the county at this rate!! Are Youngs going to loose Opel? They spent a fortune on swanky new showrooms.
    Audi was hugely popular in KK, as was Ford. I hope some (brave soul) takes on these as we need choice.

    I worked there recently , I had an idea it was going so i got out but it is very sad as they were a great bunch of people to work with in Service and Parts and the technicians were second to none .
    Barry Pender is a true Gentleman i wish every one the best of luck . But as many of these household names before they are gone. I do hope he can build it up again soon its a shame.
    We all need to shop local and spend local thats the only way to keep jobs here and keep places open.

    Ford are the second best selling brand after Toyota in Ireland, So that should have been a huge advantage to start with.
    Did Ford pull the plug or did he just go bust?
    New car dealers were making money hand over fist during the boom, where were the profits invested?

    The profits were indeed invested in property but also invested into the fancy dealerships you see closed down around the country,. EU Directives.
    Its all very well being the best selling brand but if your not selling cars there is no money coming in. Sales departments were propping up dealerships during the boom now Service Departments are trying to carry most Dealers and thats why most are going to the wall . I only knew Mr Pender a short while but if what i saw there is anything to go by he will hopefully reopen soon.
    but the key to survival of these garages are the people in the local area staying local and supporting local business .
    Sad to see them all go.

    yeah barlo nissan, i presume they are keeping nissan franchise too. barlo in clonmel have the ford dealership so who knows what might happen with ford in kilkenny.

    What will happen Youngs though? Land Rover, although popular are hardly going to be enough to replace Opel. Unless they are taking some other more upmarket franchise. Thye have a fantastic premises in Smithlands.

    Interesting they call it a "retirement" auction! I presume Ford will replace the franchise in Kilkenny? Technically Bolands New Ross are in Co. Kilkenny but I'm sure they'd like an officail presence. Ford is very popular here.

    I see that. They have flags and an Opel sign up now. They had a large showroom where they used sell Chevrolets/Daewoo so that's where Opel are now.

    True that, I saw the owners of a local bakery on nationwide there last year waxing lyrical about the importance of buying local. Hypocritically, might I add. I know where they got some of their gear and it sure as hell wasn't locally.

    Won't ask you who that was. Hard to even get local flour I'd say, though Kells Wholemeal make it in Kilkenny. Though Ireland in general would not be competitive at growing wheat for milling vs France or England.

    Anyone hear what's happening with the showrooms? Anyone rushing to take on Ford in Kilkenny?

    My father went there was a couple of bargains but most of the stuff was pricey enough. The best deal he said he saw was a 2007 Hyundai Tucson 4wd 2.0 diesel go for 4400 euro which was pretty good other than that there was nothing that majourly cheap although he only see. Half of the auction.

    Heard a rumour Dooley Motors maybe taking on the Ford franchise in KK. If not, one of the others around like Bolands potentially.
