Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.
Hi there,
There is an issue with role permissions that is being worked on at the moment.

Why would some subscribe to boards? or in fact anything that is free?

cause you get access to the dirty forum.

Because it's not really for free: Servers, Internet Connection, Switches, Routers, Firewalls, Engineers, System Administrators, Database Admins etc .....

So if you enjoy the service being offered, then why not contribute a little bit to keep the service going.

It's my contribution to boards for offering a great service. It's not as if it costs a fortune to subscribe.

Says the person who is currently a subscriber :pac: :P

But to be serious. All of which you mentioned are the costs of maintaining boards.ie - but boards makes money off adverts and if the current model wasnt working they would be turning this into a paid service.

So while the idea of contributing is nice. Its not neccessary. In Fact, being honest its foolish with money. As without users >> there is no paid advertisers >> without advertisers there is no boards.ie :P By visiting the site you are contributing

So why pay for something you dont have too? hence the thread :P

I would have thought a good reason would be the "amount of mind numbing boring hours in work Boards has helped me get through without doing a Michael Douglas Falling Down" in itself is a good reason. It's cheaper than therapy.

I doubt DeV and whoever are making bajillions off this site but even if it operated at a slight profit or loss, there would be a mass exodus if it were a paid service. If Facebook charged everyone there would be a similar exodus. The difference being, Facebook will have a billion users soon enough and if even 10% of them stuck around they'd make a fortune from that alone.

It's kinda like tipping the guy in the toilets in nightclubs for just offering you a paper towel. He's sitting there all night probably dealing with all sorts of drunks and cranks (like boards) not making a fortune (like boards probably) and, well, it's nice to be nice. I guess.

    From: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056265452
    Subscribing

We also offer the option of a paid subscription to boards.ie so as to gain some special extras, which would be otherwise unavailable. These include:
    Custom avatars (90x90, non-animated)
    Username changes
Access to the sex and sexuality forum
    Custom tagline
    Different coloured user stars
Increased PM space, 5000 instead of 500
Access to subscribers and First Class lounge forums
Ability to PM larger numbers of users at once, 15 instead of 5
Ads can be turned off from your User CP

You can get the benefits of these for the minimum of 1 month, which includes the name change option.

    The current prices are:

    1 year - €50
    3 months - €13
    1 month - €5

    To arrange this, go to:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/payments.php

Currently the only payment option is through Paypal.

I subscribe to give something back to boards. I spend a lot of time on here and get a lot of enjoyment out of it. It's a great service and I just wanted to show my appreciation.

The only reason I don't subscribe is purely down to PayPal being the only option to pay. I hate PayPal and don't have an account. If you could use Laser/Visa or something I'd sub straight away.

I asked a question in the Feedback forum about alternative methods of payment to subscribe and a very helpful and amiable After Hours moderator informed me of an alternative method. The O2 money card.

If I remember correctly, its a pain in the ass to link it though isnt it? I mean, as a lazy netizen, I dont want to be midly inconvenience by going through paypal. Lazer or Visa direct please!

    'Cos I'm not a sponge

If I was an occasional visitor to boards, I wouldn't bother paying. But I use it regularly and the €50 p.a. is worth it.

I read Boards every day for a couple of years before signing up. I just wanted to make a small contribution towards something which I've gotten so much out of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭CardBordWindow

I was very tempted to subscribe a while ago to fix the typo in my username, but now I've grown to accept it.
Prob will subscribe down the line regardless though, just out of curiosity really.
