Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The evolution of the sporting handshake

Has anyone noticed how the pre-match handshake ritual has changed?

In previous times, whenever the players shake hands in the pre-match ritual, they used to shakes hands like this http://images.mylot.com/userImages/images/postphotos/2053101.jpg

but now they seem to do it like this http://i49.tinypic.com/16hl1dt.jpg

The players even do this with the referees and assistants.

I know this may seem like a stupid topic for a thread, but I'm really interested in how this new type of handshake developed? How did football progress from the usual handshake to the current "rapper"-type of shake?

Sporting handshakes should be had after a game not before

Okay, but what input does that make to the OP?

I'm guessing handshakes between footballers have changed to a less formal type of handshake, this is the way I'd shake hands with any of my mates now, nobody would shake hands in the formal way anymore.

Very little I suppose maybe I should have said, I don't know why it's changed I hope it evolves to extinction as I hate handshakes before a game, I prefere to see my team focused and ready for 'war'

The real question is where/how did you get a photo of Richard Branson and Drake?!!?

I can't stand that diagonal handshake, it's a real pet hate. Anyone ever tries to shake my hand like that I hold firm with my hand out for in a traditional manner until they oblige.

Turkish friends of mine will always shake hands in the old school way, traveller friends of mine would be the same and Spanish that I have encountered do it too.

Its a cultural thing I think.

You wouldnt shake hands with a stranger like that surely, i think this "new" style of handshaking is generally only done amongst mates & the majority of footballers would all know eachother fairly well by now.

I don't think I've ever shaken hands with anyone the second way.

I wouldn't necessarily describe it as a handshake myself. Whenever I would do the 2nd type, it would always be a "good luck" or a "well done" tbh. If I was introducing myself to someone new it would be the traditional one.

So one's thumb goes in the middle of the other persons fingers? I've never seen that before...
    Madness!

I usually reserve the second one for job interviews, and drag the interviewer into a one-armed hug. Hasn't failed me yet.

Did anyone see Buffon after the coin toss for the Spain game? He shunned both mentioned handshakes and opted for the fist bump.

    Some man!

Yeah, I would have meant between mates or in a casual setting, wouldn't shake the new bosses hand like that!

Someone whose next going into an interview should try the "br0shake" and see how they get on
