Looking at spending a week in July over in the West, was thinking of Westport but saw a good deal on the net for an apartment in the Station House.Whats Clifden like as a base to explore Gaway,Connemara,Westport etc?Basically looking for a relaxing week with the Mrs,do the usual touristy sightseeing things, good grub etc. Will have the car so don't mind driving around.

Westport and Galway are ~hour drive from Clifden. Roundstone is close by too and you could go out to Inis Boffin for a day or even the Arann Islands. Depends on what you like to do! Some nice restaurants and pubs in Clifden too.

Clifden is a good base to see letterfrack and the national park , carraroe and the beautiful Maam Valley.
There is not a lot to do in clifden itself though.

A walk of the Sky Road, upper and lower, would knock in half a day and the views (as long as the cloud is not low) are spectacular. After that you would be ready for a pint in one of the many pubs in Clifden. Don't just go to the mainstream ones because those off the beaten (tourist) track are just as good.
