Galapagos National Park officials said that with George's death, the Pinta tortoise subspecies has become extinct.

They said his body would probably be embalmed to conserve him for future generations.

Died as a "young adult" at about 100 years of age. Amazing to think he might have seen the 22nd Century.

So passes away a creature considered one of the rarest on earth... Pity his attempts to reproduce were unsuccessful.
