improving mobile broadband modem range

Hi, Does anybody know if its possible improve the speed of mobile broadband by buying a stronger modem. I'm currently with o2, and have a huawei e220 usb modem. Also i'm pretty close to an o2 mast so thought my speed would be better. Any advice appreciated.
