I want to expand onto my pond with a 4x3x1 meter pond and stream.
What kind of liner do ye guys recommend? I have a load of rocks already .
Butyl liner is way to expensive . My current pond and stream are made of this and it cost €80 for the stream and €192 for the pond thats not that big

Changed my mind.. I want to remove the current pond and replace it with a bigger pond 3x2x1m or 4x3x1m then move the stream and have a waterfall and stream coming down to the pond from a slightly higer part of the garden. Ummmmm how do you post pictures?

Do you know if they do any child-proofing equipment for ponds ? Have moved in to house with pond and need to make it safe for small kids. Would rather keep it than fill it in.

Also can anyone give me an idea of pond maintenance needed ? The pond has a pump and filter which I've used a couple of times but just seems to make the water green.

hi i use 2in gal steel mesh.see photo.did you clean out the pond filter:Dponddigger:D 22806_593.jpg

That's not rigid though is it ?
The pond is up to a metre deep in the centre so not sure if that would be effective to have a mesh.

I found this UK site but would like to see it in person in a shop before buying.

With the filter, do you need to change sponges etc like with aquarium filters or do you just clean them out? Also there is what looks like a small intake filter (size of a small football) on the end of a long hose feeding a larger box that has an output pipe. Is the larger box just a pump or is it also a filter?

Cheers. There's a lot of leaf debris from surrounding plants which I guess would need to be dealt with manually.

I guess this is the pump as it has electric cable running to it. It stinks.

Filling it in is starting to sound tempting. How often would you need to empty a pond?

The pump works, I've had it running, it just seems to make the water worse. It was clear a few days after changing a few hundred litres.

Use the pump to drain the pond .... I use a soft sweeping brush to clean mine then hose down . Would a power hose not be too strong for the liner?? Nice ponds both of ye

I empty mine once a year . Just let the pump pump it onto the flower beds and grass . Then brush up sludge and fill back up . I only clean the filter twice a year .. Water doesn't go green

Its not necessary to ever empty a pond. Ponds arent treated the same as something like an indoor fishtank.

Maybe once a year or two, depending, siphon out the debris from the bottom of the pond, otherwise a good filter and the right plants in the right amount will take care of things.

Greenwater is due to too much sunlight/ nutrients- increase the amount of plants in the pond to shade it/ use up excess nutrients or use barley straw... Adding tapwater to a pond can also cause a sudden increase in algae if the tapwater is rich in minerals...

hi thunder ,did you get the pond kit of pondkeeper .are they good to deal with :Dponddigger:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,858 ✭✭✭Bigcheeze

Thanks all. I'm going to change some water now and then when I've worked out how to childproof it, I'll do the full clean.

Do you run the filtration constantly ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭Thunderbird2

Yes leave it on as it builds up beneficial bacteria that keep the water clear ... Clean the filter Aswell as changing the water or it will go green again ... If you add fish it helps the cycle an will keep the water clear

also check if pond has an ultra violet system. if it has it prob needs a new bulb, and this will prevent that green water(single cell algae) problem.

Hey guys, I am putting plants into my pond for the first time to deal with green water, I only have 3 or 4 small plants at the moment in it. How many plants are recommended to keep the water clean??
