Nice 2002 Clio. Paid £1500 6 years old and in mint condition. Wrote it off after 7 months. Still regret that.

1984 VW Polo 1043 CC in Navy Blue :) A Biatch to start in the morning but I could dismantle it's carb and distributor blindfolded !

Even splashed out on wheel trims for it too ! But the freedom of having a car . . . .

1966 ( I think) Fiat 850. About 1977 when I was just a nipper. It had rusty rear wheel arches, overheated, holes in the floor and no reverse gear! I drove all over the country in it and replaced the gearbox one Saturday afternoon as I was sitting my driving test on the following Tuesday morning. I failed my test on my reverse turn!! Well, it was a new concept to me!

The car was eventually written off by a drunk driver. It was totally demolished, almost head on and somehow I just walked away from it!

Bought a 94 Clio 1.2 RN the day after I passed my test with my Credit Union money. It had no creature comforts, it cost over 3,000 punts to insure, it was a piece of sh1t but it was MY piece of sh1t! I felt like a King driving it into college on my first day (only just bought).

The drivers seat broke, half the badge was missing so it was called a RLT, the clutch went a week after i got it, I crashed it into a Volkswagen LT van and fixed it myself, it had a Sony Discman on the dash with a tape adapter, and I broke into it with a coat hanger after locking the keys in it. 12 years later I miss the innocence of that little car. My current large motor is far too reliable!

A 1997 1.4 5 door Civic. I loved it. Had it until it was written off by a moron that couldn't drive his garage's jeep.

00 Opel Corsa, at the time the Electric Blue ones were popular. Dinger of a car. Someone crashed into me and wrote the thing off, I was devastated, until the assessor gave me a cheque for twice what I paid for the car :D

1992 Suzuki Swift (badged as a Cultus cos it was a grey import). A whopping 993 of the finest CCs. Absolutely hateful car. Electrics were so dodge that when driving at night, I could either have lights or radio, but not both.

1998 Atoz, it was my mams car (piece of Sh*t), when it broke got an 08 Corsa (my current car).

A 96 Citroen Saxo in blue, bodykit, alloys, bucket seats, €650, twas a lovely little car, wrote it off less than a year later, bent the chassis, a garage took it as a trade in and sold it a young fella who rightly wrote it off :(

When I was 16 my dad bought an old Lancia Thema and told me I could have it as my first car, till he drove it and realised how fast it was :D

So he told me one day when I was almost 17 that he was going out to get me my first car, I was delighted of course, all my friends had little Renault Clios and Opel Corsas and I couldnt wait to have my own little car.. He arrives back an hour later with a 1997 1.4 Seat Cordoba.. I literally didnt speak to him for a week, I got slagged rotten in school because of my big car, I was devastated. I miss that car so much now, after I left school and the slagging stopped I realised how much I loved it, then my dad sold it, again didn't speak to him for a week (he cant win) :D

All the girls I was pals with in school still drive tiny little cars and would freak if they had to drive a big car, till last year I was driving a 2 litre (petrol) Volvo v40 estate, I love big cars, have my eye on a diesel Audi A4 :p
Your dad bought you afar when you were 17 so you could drive to school and you didn't talk to him for a week

Most people i knew had to get part time jobs to buy bicycles to get to school

    1983 Opel Kadett D.
No ABS, airbags, seatbelt tensioner, traction control, power steering, electric windows, tricky diff or electronic anything. And about 56 bhp.
And it was monkeysh*t brown. Inside and out. Loved it to bits. Bought it for 400 Deutschmark, it had a worn camshaft which I replaced with the help of a friend.
(This is a model, but it looks exactly like the one I had)

A 1983 Nissan Cherry in light metalic green, only had it a fortnight and broke the handbrake cable on it trying to impress a girl on the beach. Drove the balls off it and it still gave me no trouble.

I'm not bitter I'm just saying

My first car was a peugot 405 td it was a runout model and had everything
Most comfy car in the history of cars but the turbo seals went at 180,000 miles and I drive home on the engine oil

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭bop1977

I was given a 1990 Nissan micra carvan as my first car. My dad bought it from new and clocked up over 100000 miles. I had it for 2 years and passed my test in it. Sold it to a guy my dad worked with for £300 punts.

Found out a few weeks later the engine siezed but the new owner had a second micra who's body work was in bits but had a solid engine. Cue one engine swap and the car was kept on the road.

I miss that car. It had 2 seats, no power steering, an AM radio and cost about 50p to drive for weeks.

hmmm a 1992 Fiat Uno, the heating didn't work and it drove like a carboard box on wheels. I loved it though, I was like 18 at the time so the freedom was quiet a novel concept, and any car is better then no car :D.

Mk 2 Fiesta. Little under 1L engine, 4 speed gearbox - would scream at you when you took it over 75mph. Loved that car and drove the length and bredth of Ireland in it.

I'll never forget the sense of elation the first day I drove it into work after passing my test - that feeling of freedom that I could go anywhere, anytime I wanted - pure magic.

My first car was a Opel Corsa, think it was a '98. Weird kinda greeny yellowy type of colour. Needless to say as soon as I got my full licence and was sure that my first job outta college was gonna last that Corsa was immediately traded in for a Ford Focus.

1981 Vauxhall Astra - I bought it from my dad in 1990, he must have bought a grey market import as it was brand new (it had a *radio* in it (LW and MW, the height of fashion and technology)) but with all the Vauxhall badges (that I had to replace when some scrote knicked them) as the equivalent Irish car would have been the Opel Kadett. It had a 1.2 engine, 53 bhp. I think I managed to eke the ton out of it. On the autobahn, honest. *cough*.

Yes, downhill, with favorable winds and ignoring the tortured screams from the engine, it was indeed possible to just about do 160 km/h in it.

Probably didn't do a whole lot better around town normally? :)

Mark II escort, I think it produced 450 BHP or was it 480? Can't remember, it was probably measured in thrust if the afterburner was energised. 1100cc RWD Ford, what more could you want. Although my memory could have faded just a little.

Wasnt too bad, once i behaved.
Never really kept an eye on what it did use, just noticed it when i had to fill up 2x in 4 days where i normally would go once a week

Lived in the south part of the city i lived, worked in the northern part, couldnt do that fast anyway all the way through the city centre. Not as bad as Dublin but still lots of traffic lights. The auto box was fantastic for that kind of driving though. Might have done 26/28 mpg that way

But driving it for any other reason than commute i might have gotten 20/22 mpg.

It is the car i have the fondest memories of. Maybe because it was my first car.
Wouldnt mind to get another one but it has to be the 6 cyl 2.3 liter then.
The sound of 6 cylinders of that era (Ford/BMW) was fantastic.

Ha, small world. The only difference is you probably were *actually* on an autobahn when you got to 160km/h ;) whereas I was err...elsewhere.

A 1980 MK V Cortina 1.6L hand-me-down from an uncle. Very fetching in two-tone 1970s puke beige and rust spots.

Pre-NCT so worn suspension issues gave some "fun" handling characteristics and all the clunks and rattles drowned out the rather pathetic Motorola stereo, it was very thirsty but it were a grand car...

    2000 Rover 25 1.4ie (105)
Bought for me the day I passed my test (At 23 :o).

Not a bad car, until the gearbox ate itself.

Spent first 4 years driving in a 1.6 Ford Focus hatch on provisional (mothers car but I'd say I put 80% of the miles on it).

Bought it when I was 18, imported it from the UK as sterling was 91p on the euro and it was cheaper + better spec'd than anything I could get here.

    sorento.jpg

2004 Kia Sorento XS ,2.5 Turbo diesel , bought with 55,000 miles on it. Full leather, heated, power seats , climate control, cruise control, 18" alloys, Kenwood DVD Navigation, heated windscreen , 5 speed auto with tiptronic , full time 4wd with low range box, heated mirrors.

the car had everything and was really comfy, that was when diesel was 89 cent a litre in 2008 , It was a great car and Id love to buy it back some day just for sentimental value.

cheers, I just always despised small hatchbacks, and the insurance was cheaper than any quote I could get on a 2 litre saloon.
