    Good programme on tv3 at the moment. Seems to be fairly good and going over the weather the past few years

    That was a real throw away comment about the extremes in our past, in 1740 a quarter of the population dies in a cold winter?

    Must start googling.

    I heard that before alright, sometime in the early 1700s. Apparently the population only recovered by the 1820s and then our population continued to grow until the famine.
    Im not sure of the details of that winter, but I think it was caused by a volcano and there was low temperatures right through the summer too to cause crop failures.
