I've received Thinksound ON2 from recent drop on Massdrop. These are sick looking headphones and they sound even better. Delighted that I've got them.

I did not go too far into the Massdrop system but you are obviously familiar with how it works. You may already know about the drop for Sennheiser 6XX headphones, which are the same as the 650's.

I've own the HD600 headphones but am in the process of selling them now. Had them for a few years connected to an amp and DAC with high bitrate music coming from the PC through USB but I never truly warmed to them. I also have a pair of HD25's which I adore. Great sound and such a versatile pair of cans - use them in the gym, on the bus, gaming, music. Just fantastic and don't require amps

I understand the versatility of the HD25s but they are nothing compared to the 600s, unsure how you couldn't warm to them.

A link and price to them would be appreciated!

I have bought 3 headphones over the last 12 years all based on his recommendation, namely the Creative Aurvana Live, the Sony Mdr-1r and the Phillips Fidelio X2. All the headphones were sonically exactly as he described and I love them all.

Nice one. I never realised the comfort of velour pads until I got my X2's last year. I find that comfort is a major factor in the enjoyment one can get from a good set of headphones.

Definitely. My left ear for some reason is quite sensitive and find a lot of headphone's make it ache after a while. Only pair's i have that don't make it hurt are the Beyerdynamics and my HD 650's.

Has anyone used Tube energiser/amps with Stax? I picked up a set of SR-007 MK1s a few years back but it's running off a 323s, their most basic energiser. It's a pretty mismatched pairing quality wise but my intent was to put the effort into one element and upgrade the other later, and it's getting to that time. I'm not ready to make the big jump to something like the Blue Hawaii but I was thinking maybe the Woo GES, I just have always used solid-state amps before and while I think that tube-sound would suit my tastes I want to be sure before even planning an upgrade.
    Thoughts?

Why not bring the cans to somewhere you can try a few amps ?

The only place I've seen that carry electrostatic amps are cloney-audio and I think they had Stax only. Anywhere else you'd recommend?

Didn't realize we still had so little options for this.

Did you give the cloney guys a call? I'd ring them and see what they can do for you or they might be able to put you in touch with someone

Any opinions on the Sennheiser HD579s? Argos have them for €73 at the moment. Had been holding off for a while to get ATH M50x or Beyerdynamics DT 770s but these seem to be a great price. I know they're open back though so I'll need to get a set of closed back ones in a few weeks anyway but tempted by these.

Not heard them myself. I did have a pair of 598cs but i thought the sound was very flat and i love Sennheiser products usually. Have a pair of HD 650's and love them. I tried EQ'ing the 598's but could not get a sound i was happy with so i sold them. I recently got a pair of those Beyerdynamics and they are amazing.

What type of sound do you like? The DT 770's have a nice warm sound which i prefer. If you do go for them make sure you check their ohm rating as there are different versions. I have the 80 ohm pair which are supposed to have the most bass out of all the versions of them. I also used own the M50x's and sold them. I think they are overrated myself. The 770's blow them away imo.

This will be my first pair of anyway decent headphones. Currently using a turntable with amp and bookshelf speakers but want to get headphones for when I need to keep the volume down. Also hoping to use it with my iPhone and laptop as well. I wouldn’t have a problem gettting a DAC and amp at some point but think for now the 80 ohm version would be best.

I’d be hoping for a neutral enough sound, don’t listen to bass heavy music. Had read the M50x can be a bit bass heavy so looks like the beyerdynamics would be best option for me so. Thanks.

I found the M50X's bass to be very muddy. Have looked at a few reviews of the 579's and they are all positive. Nice punchy bass compared to a lot of the other Sennheisers in that price range. They are only 50 ohms too.

If you're ever looking for a nice good priced headphone amp in the future i have the one below. Fantastic value i found. Half volume would blast your ears off.

I am very tempted by the 579s at that price. Only thing holding me back is they’re open back and not sure the better half would appreciate me on the laptop with noise leakage when she’s trying to watch TV. I’ve used an SMSL amp for speakers in the past and found them great so that looks ideal.

I’ll wait to the weekend and if they’re still on offer and in stock in my local Argos i think I’ll pick them up. The DT 770s will have to wait until next payday though.

Aye. Open back are great but not for anyone other than the person using them. 75 for the 579's is a good deal though.

Said i'd check argos to see if they had any stock and saw they were further reduced tp €69.99. I took that as a sign so reserved a pair, just picked them up. Haven't got to test them out yet

Spent a few hours with the 579s the last few days. Have to say overall I'm delighted with them, give a really nice full sound. Bass is decent but doesn't overwhelm. Biggest problem is the cable, comes with a massive 6mm jack which actually goes into my guitar amp nicely and lets me play without wrecking everyones head but when you put on the 3mm adapter included its extremely bulky. Not a big deal though, ordered a replacement cable off ebay.

Lads I've been using Sennheiser 598c closed back headphones for over a year and thought they were the business. Last night my brother showed up with these garish looking Monster headphones but when I tried them out they were much better quality than my Sennheiser's. I listened to a few of my favourite songs and heard certain sounds that I've never heard in them before. This was while just listening to Spotify on an iPhone.

With that in mind, what headphones could I get that will be an upgrade on my current Sennheiser's, while still only listening through an iPhone?

What music do you listen to mostly?

For something that can be powered properly and still sound good on an iPhone I'd look at grado if you listen to a lot of rock/folk/

    or buy your brothers :pac:

You can get Bayerdynamic DT 770's in various ohm's. The lower one's would meet your needs. I have the 80ohm version and absolutely love them.

    These :

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/beyerdynamic-770-PRO-Studio-Headphones/dp/B008POFOHM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1515935450&sr=8-4&keywords=dt+770+pro

The only thing i'd miss is the velour earpads. Faux leather doesn't agree with me after a while.

Thank man. Is there any specific reason why they're better than the 598c's, since they're actually cheaper than them on Amazon?

I prefer a more warm sounding headphone which i don't think the 598 Cs are. The DT 770 Pro's i have are very warm and just the right amount of bass. I am a Sennheiser nut but the 598's sound just didn't do it for me. Have a set of HD 650's and love their sound. It's all subjective really. It's a pity there aren't more places you can go to try before you buy.

You'd need an amp or you may aswell just get a basic set. 250ohm's is way too high to justify buying them. You'll be able to use them of course with an iphone but they'd sound the same as a €20 cheapo pair.

Even this doesn't have enough power.

They’re open back as well so not suitable for public transport if you commute. Unless you want to piss off everyone on it.

Yeah I sold my pc but still game on PS4. Would these be good for that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

You could get something like the Oppo HA 2se, that can connect to your phone/pc etc and drive nearly all headphones up to 400ohm (I think. Going off memory). They’re pricey though, I’d say the Beyerdynamic DT 770s might be a better shout. Closed back and come in a variety of versions.

I was going to say if you game on a PC you could justify getting an amp and also buy a Modmic so you could use them for gaming on the PC. Best of both worlds instead of buying a crappy gaming headset. That's what i do. Not sure you could with a PS4. The controller wouldn't be able to power them. 50ohm's would be realistic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭Grahamer666

And as Ivefoundgod says. Those lower Ohm BD's would be more suitable for you. Or the Sennheiser's.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 803 ✭✭✭BelovedAunt

Thanks lads, would the DT770 32 OHM's be best for an iphone or could I go higher OHM's?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭Grahamer666

    Lower the better.

Got myself a pair of Massdrop HD 6XX aka Sennheiser HD650's in Cex store today. They were advertised b grade but that was just because there was no box otherwise they look brand new to me. Price was €175 but I traded in some tech I had no more use for and that meant that all I had to hand over was just €101.

What a find. These things are just superb. I was last year quite disappointed with my first pair of open cans, Phillips X2's and wasn't expecting these to be as good as I was hoping but they so are. Even better I have no high end dac/amp and they sound great just out of my smartphone. My phone does have a dac add-on, but even out of the standard output they sound great. I had thought that without a dac (as they are high impedance) they would sound faint or something but no.

I find them to be very comfortable and a lot lighter than I was expecting. They actually don't feel any more cumbersome that my portable cans. The Massdrop version has a shorter cable and regular sized audio jack which I much prefer.

Well what can I say, the top end Senns really stand up to all the hype and I'm really fussy about sound quality. Couldn't recommend them more.

Yes. In the US I believe the Massdrop version of the HD650 go for $199, which is great. I believe international shipping to Europe is €15. I couldn't swear by that but I'm sure all that info is on their website.
