This may sound like a dumb question, but please bear with me as I'm really not well up on this:)

Could a wireless router improve your internet speed when using a USB Modem
    (O2) for wireless broadband?
My wireless broadband is quite slow at present but I don't really want to go the Eircom or UPC route for broadband if I could avoid it. Could a router help with this?

No, although with a wireless router you have the option of placing it where it has it's strongest signal. Remember, stronger signal does not mean better speed, you can have full signal and poor speed.

Right. So installing home broadband is the only realistic way to improve speed - is that correct? Thanks.

Exactly, It's not broadband, it's designed for light use on the move. The mobile networks would be great if people didn't treat mobile as a real broadband substitute.
