Upgrade for 27" IPS Monitor

Im thinking of upgrading to one of the 27" IPS monitors from Korea in the other thread, but im thinking my PC will need a bit of a upgrade to make use of it.

So I currently have the following

Q9550 , currently at stock but I had it 3.4Ghz so presumably can go that again.
    Asus P5k-E
    GTX-460 (768mb version i think)
4gb of DDR2-800 OCX (I think there could be 8gb, I'll check later)
    Antec 900 case
650W Corsair PSU (or maybe 550w, will confirm later)

I have about €650 in total (somewhat flexible)

If the monitor costs me €300 that leaves €350 for the upgrade

I have a second PC that will be the receiver of any parts that are replaced from the above. The parts from the second oc that are replaced will probably be sold and can be added to the budget, but wouldn't be worth much (e5200 OC@4ghz, 4850 512 @ stock, 450w Corsair PSU)

    EDIT:

Forgot to mention it is for gaming (BF3, Skyrim etc)

At that resolution you're going to be bottlenecked 100% by your graphics card, so just buy a 7950/gtx 670.

    Thanks Gents,

The PSU is a 650W (unlike me to shoot above what i need :) ), will that be enough to power the cards being mentioned?

Yeah, you could run it on a 550 watt and still overclock.

Am I the only one, who thinks that putting 7950 in to such old system and hooking it to 1440p monitor is a bad idea?

Op, you plan on playing games. There is nothing worse them having a monitor that can do such resolution, but constantly droping resolution and visuals to get decent frame rate.

7950 will bottleneck that system. It's going to be a waste. You won't be able to put eye candy up too. Just ability to crank up resolution to 1440p and look at low quality textures is just sad.
I would just suggest to take that 650eu buy a lovely 23-24 1080p monitor, then get upgrade on your system. Get better balanced configuration and strong base. Some 2500k, z77 with 7850 and a nice 1080p monitor.

That's just what I would do, you can ignore my post and just get 7950 and catleap ;)

The thing is at that resolution the 7950 is still arguably going to be the bottleneck. It's the same reason why you only need a 6770 for 720p: The power of a better card would be wasted due to a CPU bottleneck. But when you go higher up the resolution chart, it changes. It then becomes the GPU that holds back the system.

7950 will still be slower on core 2 quad CPU then any modern CPU. It's sort of waste of money. Buying a Ferrari with a limiter on 50km/h.

The CPU would be a bottleneck on 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and maybe 1920x1200, but it won't be for 1440p for reasons already outlined.

Games aren't the only thing I'll be using the PC for, I do a decent amount of Dev on it too. Playing games on ultra is not a requirement, but i am weary of not really being able to drop the res of anything down on the monitor.

    I already have a 23" 1080p monitor and a 22" 1050p monitor.

I like a dual monitor setup, so, if its possible, i would want to keep one of them. If i sold the 23" i would get the guts of €100 (Dell with HDCP) which could be added to the budget.

Selling the e5200, 4850, ram and a mobo would surely net me another €100-€120

The €350 budget then becomes €570 to buy a GFX, CPU and Mobo and RAM.

I'm not tied to that budget either, if needs be I can some more to it.

So I guess the question then becomes, what would you do with €600 and that monitor?

Thanks for your input so far :)

Nice build, but if you're going to get the great 2500k is there any point in getting the MSI Z77? It's a fairly poor board so you're probably better off getting an AsRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3.

Could get an EVGA 670 for a tenner more, but it's a reference model against a beasty 7950 so it's probably about even.

Hey guys, can use a dual screen setup with a single card if one of the monitors is a dual link?

Don't get 16GB RAM, 8 is loads! Everything else looks great, maybe change the case to this? It's a superior case due to better thermals and great cable management. It also has a fan controller. It also comes in black if you don't like the snazzy white

the only thing i wanted to change was case, and you did it for me! :D

500R is a sexy case. i have it myself, white version, which looks great combined with light blue LEDs on fans. you cant go wrong with it OP.
i dont know about ram, would video editing use a lot of it? for gaming alone 8GB is more then enough OP.

You don't need the upgrade kit, I think there's a paper box version that's a good bit cheaper.

Maybe I went through it too fast but it seemed to be dearer

I went for with the build listed above. Cheers for the help!
