Wall - Raised bed ideas please

    Hi, hope some of you guy's can give us some ideas.

    we recently built a wall around a part of the house which we hope to I suppose turn into a private patio area eventually. We built the wall with a cavity as such i.e. the wall is about 2.5ft high with the middle of it filled with clay (this bit is about a foot wide). We are now looking for ideas of what to plant in the wall. we are a bit undecided as to whether to go for something that is evergreen and will provide a screened off area like laurel or maybe something that is decidious and flowers in the spring / summer months when (weather permitting, though unlikely) we can have a bbq or private party. I suppose we also have to take into consideration that the area could suffer from drought unless it was watered on a regular basis. any ideas would be appreciated.
