    1) Surely when buying a 2008 BMW you'd expect it to be serviced at time of sale?

With the condition based servicing and seeing as it was on a free service plan from bmw, it doesnt follow that it would be serviced at time of sale if there were no items needing attention. I dont quite agree with that but thats the way they have gone.

Yes I think there should be a recall from BMW for this. I too have an N47 engine with 37K on it and if it where to fail it would be gut wrenching to say the least.

I think there should be some sort of combined compliant to BMW to put pressure on them. Something similiar like this happened with the VW group where they had issues with the injectors in the 2.0 diesels and after so many compliants and even a report on watchdog done they eventually agreed to a recall to replace all injectors on the 2006 to 2008 models with the issue. Maybe something similiar should be done for BMW as this engine is every where on the road, E60, E90, E92 etc

Get yours checked also. I hear no noise from mine but told by bmw that there is. They didn't spend the time with me to show me exactly what it is. They just expect me to drop 6k without asking questions.

2nd opinions next week and will take it from there.

You are right. In fact when I dropped it to the garage first they said it wasn't due even though the Car computer was telling it was. They then checked again and said they would service (Oil / brake fluid / Micro Filters), Car has now completed 3 services with 37K miles (60K Klm)

Did your research take place before or after the purchase and the problem?

    Just wondering.

No only started researching this problem after I bought it. Again Going to an indy BMW specialist for 2nd opinion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 493 ✭✭irelandjoe

    Update:
Indy garage looked at car and confirmed an issue. however they would not change the crankshaft as they say at this stage it would be unlikely that that is needed. I also called a BMW Dealer in the North and they said the same thing. the cost would be significantly less with that part omitted.

On another note I may be entitled to a refund of my VRT should I return the car to the UK.

I am waiting to see if garage in UK will take the car back. Will not hold my breathe though.

Surely best solution is for seller to have the car repaired or is he refusing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 209 ✭✭The Tyre Dude

Not yet another BMW engine design flaw?! Nikasil, Vanos, Swirl flaps, failing Turbos, lousy cooling systems and now this. I used to be the be a big fan of the marque but their engineering seems to be pure junk these days.

not refusing but to willing to pay the 5800 being quoted.

update: I have now been quoted from 3 other garages all quoting a third LESS then my original quote 2 of the other garages are Authorised BMW dealers. Me thinks the first Garage was trying it on......

I am still waiting to hear if the seller will take the car back but if I get the car repaired at BMW they give a 2 year Parts and Labour warranty on the engine. With this car ony done 37K that might be an option if the seller will not take the car back and agree to pay the lower repair cost.

I think its shocking that a garage can quote 3 times, the other garages where shocked at what I was quoted. I will not name and shame just yet. but I will be reporting this to BMW not that it will make any difference.

I will keep you posted on how I get on.

How is changing the timing chain so expensive?? circa €4k???

How is changing the timing chain so expensive?? circa €4k???

I was quoted €5800 by a local BMW dealer. They have to remove the engine ... Charging 2700+vat labour.

They are also priced for changing the crankshaft which they said BMW recommend. All other dealers I have spoken with say that is rubbish.

    Is a Joke IMO.

And for the pleasure get bad attitude and rudeness by one of the staff. Not just experience by me if you see my initial post.

So what's the best price you can get now?

Shows one drawback of buying in the UK I suppose.

If you could get it fixed you'd still have a very nice motor that would in all liklihood give you no more issues in the near future.

If you weren't so such of the FSH I'd say it was a prime candidate for being clocked...

Have you tried ringing Bavaria in Belfast to see if they would offer a quote?
BMW dealers up in NI are quite a bit cheaper for servicing than down here.

I guess. I agree I checked the mileage, verified and saw the FSH with BMW. So was happy to buy. One dealer I spoke with told me he has seen these chain's fail at 20K. BMW should take notice.

Chain is against the bulkhead so it involved removing engine and gearbox and then a lot of the engine has to be stripped down to replace chain and tensioner.
Someone has posted a pic guide of it online.

Why would the "top notch" engineers at BMW design an engine in this way, it beggars belief. Do they do it deliberately or something?

Shockingly yes I can. Because the fault was found within 7 days of VRT registration, I have a fantastic case and have been told I will.... I have to provide a bunch of evidence etc which would be no problem.

I have a few things I need to think about

    1. Will I be happy to get the car repaired... Will every little noise get me wondering something else is wrong (2 year warranty will help me have some piece of mind )

    2. If the seller agrees to exchange the car I have the hassle of getting car back to UK, getting VRT refund, Getting a new car in and getting it registered etc etc.

The next few days will tell a lot as I wait for the seller to call me, BMW head office to call be back and one more final quote to come back from another dealer.

What I nightmare this has been.

Its listed as a 13 hour job in labour alone so it will be expensive.

Its very unlikely that the crank would need changing and you could probably still get the same job done for close on half the price in a reputable independent garage still using genuine parts.

If BMW are refusing to acknowledged the problem(which is their brief from Germany) then I wouldn't be giving them the money to fix it.

I have been quoted €1900 by an indy for the Job with 6 month warranty and about €2300 by an authorised BMW dealer to do it with a 2 year warranty.

I know what you saying about giving BMW the money but would be my preference at that...... I still can't understand the other garage trying to charge me €5800....

You can be sure it wasn't deliberate anyway :)
The design may or may not be fine, the issue could be in the components which no doubt match the design and user specifications.

Depending on the actual occurrence of the issue on these engines the lack of admission that there is an issue by BMW is worse than the actual issue imo.

Things go wrong, how they're dealt with can make up for them going wrong in many cases.

€2300 sounds like a very decent price in fairness, of course it is for work that one wouldn't expect to need doing.

But you aren't naming and shaming, you are simply posting quotes that you've been given.

I can make a fairly safe guess at which BMW dealer is giving you the 5k+ price but having said that, if they are changing the crank in that price(if its needed or not is another question) then its not comparable to the other quotes as a crank alone is likely going to be around 2k on its own.

Crank is €1200 I guess extra labour is required.

I am going to request crank quotes also from all garages as from what I am reading not changing the crank will just mean the chains will have to be done again if the crank is not done.

    Just found this also

It is a known issue but unofficial.
The crankshaft sprocket has been redesigned since.

"There are 3 "features" with this engine that come together to create a nightmare.
Firstly, they decided to make an unusual choice of putting the timing chain at the back of the engine which means the engine needs to be removed from the car to inspect anything.
Secondly, they have timing chain tensioner issues which can result in a grinding or rubbing sound which is something that is documented.
Thirdly, the cog that drives everything is friction welded onto the crankshaft and they have had a poor finish resulting to excessive wear to the chain, and you can't just replace the cog, the entire crankshaft needs to be replaced which is an expensive part."

€2300 with 2 year warranty, get as much as possible from the dealer in the UK and forget about it. That's what I'd do anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 493 ✭✭irelandjoe

    Update:
UK dealer agreed to take car back for Full refund or exchange. Ferry booked for Monday..... For that I am 100% grateful apart from the expensive I have had in transporting the car etc but that is part of the risk / expense when you buy in the UK.

My last 1 hour conversation I had with BMW IRELAND where they admitted to me on the phone that there IS a problem with the Timing Chain / Crankshaft in the N47 engine (I have asked to get a recording of our conversation) but BMW are choosing NOT to do anything about it ! I think this is SHOCKING. I got the impression I was talking to myself and that what I had said was being said to him the 20th time that day. He was well versed in what he had to say. Which was very little.

They are letting drivers get out of warranty and getting hit with massive repair bills. I guess it's win win for BMW.

BTW I was advised by a Garage up north that they did the exact job 3 weeks ago at a cost to the owner of £5500  So the first Garage I was quoted by was not far off !!!! i just wish their attitude was different and the entire ordeal would have been a little easier to swallow.

At the VERY least BMW should issue FREE inspections for all affected models to see if there is a problem because in most cases drivers do not know they have an issue until the Timing Chain snaps or while in for an inspection it's spotted..

Now Lets hope the car makes it back to UK with no issues. Will update all if I get anything fresh.

And vrt refund? Have you confirmed that you can get it back?

  • Registered Users Posts: 209 ✭✭The Tyre Dude

Thanks for the update OP. It really is a shocking design flaw to put the chain at the bulkhead side, even if the chain arrangement didn't have a design flaw, odds are it would need to be replaced in the lifetime of the car, so engine out time and €2000+ bill.

I would be looking to get this issue some exposure (media or otherwise) any way you can. BMW's attitude seems very poor. It certainly would put me off buying any car with that engine.

I completely intent to. I will be requesting audio of my conversation with BMW where they admitted there is an issue with the engine and sending it to watchdog.

Others will and have been caught out.

Shocking .... Every garage I have spoken to in Ireland and Northern Ireland have done at least 3-5 this year.

No wonder they had to offer 2 year warranty on used cars.

I'd say the ops car will be off to the auction in the UK.

    That's absolutely appalling.

BMW should hang their heads in shame.

Jesus their diesels are a disaster - the 320d was blowing turbos and injectors and swirl flaps and DMFs and every God damm thing between 2002 and 2004, then they improved those problems somewhat and these things happened at a slower rate.

Then in 2007 they bring out the N47 engine, which you'd think now that this is their fourth generation of the 2.0 diesel they'd finally have sorted out these basic engineering flaws. And indeed they seem to have sorted out the turbo and swirl flaps at long long last. But, hey presto, they had to make an absolute balls of something as simple as a bloody timing chain instead:mad:!

What's even worse is that the BMW fanboys claim that BMW's diesels are 'class leading' - the only thing they seem to be 'class leading' at is their ability to break down and cost their owners a ridiculous amount of money to fix when they go wrong:mad:!

You can be sure that the new M550d engine will cost an absolute bomb to put right when it goes wrong, and it will, if BMW can't make a single turbo engine work then a tri-turbo yoke is definitely going to give trouble - three turbos means three times as many things to go wrong really!

Not only that, but their 'Efficient Dynamics' non-turbo petrol engines suffer from injector and coil pack failure to beat the band, so basically there is no such thing as a reliable 3 series or 5 series from 2007 onwards.

You really are now just paying for that badge on the bonnet, and quite a handsome price you're paying for it as well!

I used to be a big fan of their engines and engineering and the general concept of a sensible comfortable executive saloon that could put a real smile on a drivers' face if you wanted to have some fun, but really they've gone to hell these days with build quality and reliability, and now all the things they used to stand for, like NA petrols, rear wheel drive, six cylinder engines etc etc are all gone down the toilet as well.

And of course now that Toyota will soon be using their disastrously unreliable diesel engines from next year, Toyota diesel reliability will be going down the tubes too from 2013 onwards!

Shameful head in the sand treatment from BMW. I definately would not be giving them or dealers my money to fix their **** up.

I'm seriously thinking about going back to a less complex petrol for my next purchase, I'd rather spend that sort of money on fuel. I'll have to sit on my ticking timebomb (no pun intended) for the time being though..

100% agree Bazz, has already been described to me as a time bomb. Cant wait to get rid of it now.

Shame on BMW. They have tweeted me after someone I know reached out to them but I expect more of the same.

One of the many words I can use to describe this experience is "disappointment"

There is not denying, though, that BMW are undeniable world leaders in one main area.......

    Marketing.

They have that down so well and their brand is so ingrained in most people minds that they actually don't have to worry about these type of issues. For every person who says they will never buy a BMW again their are 5 more who 'aspire' to own one:rolleyes:

It's very disappointing to hear Joe's story and BMW's response.
I came from a Nissan Primera which I bought back in 2005 brand new and apart from a wheel bearing it's been bulletproof for me.
I bought a 2007 520D which luckily has the M47 engine and was seriously considering upgrading to a 09 M-sport ...however after Joe's story this is not going to happen. I love the car so far and I knew Joe was very impressed with it so I feel sorry that he has this problem.
It's stories like this that put me off brands and I've zero brand loyalty and I would consider Audi/Mercedes etc if and when I'm going to upgrade.

Send an email to that effect to BMW Ireland and UK. This BS from BMW will cost them sales, let them know.

The ironic thing is that BMW Ireland is a subsidiary of BMW UK - and this has been the case since 2004. BMW Ireland is basically a regional division of BMW GB. The only difference between Irish and UK spec BMWs is kph clocks, and obviously the general tendency of the Irish buyer to go for the poverty spec engine, trim level and order the car with no extras.

Just got back to Ireland now.

BMW returned to Dealer in UK cargiant who credited the entire amount to me.

I ended up getting a 2010 Avensis T4 which was more loaded then the BMW... I know its no BMW BUT i now have a car that is reliable has a warranty with the manufacturer and a as far as my dealings so far have friendly helpful staff.

I have to say cargiant really looked after me, I had to push to get a few things but they were open minded and did as much as they could.

Found it funny when BMW Ireland called me to ask me how my recent service experience was at BMW garage.... I told her exactly what I thought of BMW service its N47 engine and it's neglect to it's customers with this critical engine design flaw.

    Anyway

BMW gone and now waiting to see if BMW HQ respond to my email.
Watchdog is also been contacted, I just want other people to get cars checked before this becomes a bigger issue for people. BMW should IMO offer all affected cars a free inspection for this issue to put drivers of these cars mind at rest.
