616 - The number of the Beast. In 2005 fragments of an early papyrus bible emerged that have that number instead of the more common 666 in the famous quote from the Book of Revelations.

Apparently the two different numbers reflect two different spellings of the Emperor Nero's name, for which this number is believed to be a code.

KLM Flight 633 from Amsterdam to New York which crashed into a mudbank in the Shannon, shortly after takeoff from a Shannon Airport stopover on Sept 5, 1954. 28 people lost their lives out of the 56 on board after the plane was partially submerged. Although the crash site was only about 2500 metres from the airport, no one was aware of the disaster. Rescue operations were only started after the plane's navigator escaped the wreck, got back to the shore and managed to reach the airport to raise the alarm.
