Hi folks, looking for a bit of advice. Long story short, my gf is working in camp in rural New York and is having trouble getting the chef there to make her any kind of food she can eat. Due to a medical condition she can't eat large amounts of protein so that rules out meat, eggs, cheese (except small amounts) and any of the meat substitutes like Quorn etc. The only thing she's been given to eat so far has been microwaved frozen veg and cheesy pasta (that she really shouldn't eat that often) so she's basically been starving/eating junk food to survive. The camp directors seemingly don't care either and the nearest supermarket is an hour away and she has no way of getting there anyway so there's not much she can do for herself.

She's there another month and a half so I'm thinking of posting her over something, even if it's only healthy snack foods but not really sure what I can send. She'd never normally snack that much so I'm not really aware of what she'd like/good veggie options. Would love to hear any suggestions you'se might have.

Well, it would need to keep for a while, so rice crackers and crisp bread spring to mind.
Or those Japanese rice cracker things? Some mixed nuts and dried fruit?

Where can I get those? Asian shops?

Nuts are no good (too much protein). Dried fruit isn't too bad though. Forgot to mention, she can get dry pasta so I can send out pasta sauce and the like as well.

It might work out cheaper to order the food online from an American website and get it delivered directly to her. She would get it quicker too.
How about getting a personalised food hamper. A quick google brought up this site, http://www.deandeluca.com/ and http://www.designityourselfgiftbaskets.com/, but I'm sure there are plenty of sites.

I looked into those but they actually don't work out that much cheaper. And most of them have food she can't eat anyway. Cheers though.

Most health food hops have them, Holland&Barrett definitely do.
Hey also have those veggie spreads, they're yummy and should survive some trans-atlantic travel.

could send her fresh food too from those american sites? fruit/veg? At least she could have a nice lasagne or pasta then. they tend to have more veggie stuff over there too, but no protein is a bit of a problem.

Surely Amazon would be an option?

    http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Organic-Grocery/b/ref=sa_menu_nto11?ie=UTF8&node=51537011

Isn't postage free above a certain amount?

Had she informed the camp directors of her requirements beforehand?

iHerb.com have a fairly good selection of veggie snacks, food, etc and chipping is relatively cheap in the US, might be worth a look.

She's been 2 years ago and had the same problems and her brother(who has the same condition) was there before. The camp directors just don't seem to care about the people working there.

Posted out yestereday a load of nice pasta sauces, Japanese rice cracker senbei, dried fruits and a nice bar of Butler's chocolate. That iHerb site is awful to navigate but I might try that out in a week or two.

    Cheers for the help everyone!

Yeah, I'd be inclined to recommend ordering locally to be shipped to her.

My concern from mailing food is that a customs officer could stop it and if they were really arsey could make a stink about attempting to import foreign vegetables. Though they do seem fairly relaxed about it, and even the FDA policy says that they generally just ignore food posted for personal use:

I labelled it as "candy", which apparently is a near full proof way of getting food through.
