Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Good job but it was a bit unnecessary.

"Tens of kilometres", so it was less than 100.

He had food and water for 10 days. You could easily walk that distance in a few days.

But it would be tough walking that distance in a desert. I doubt if he could carry 10 days worth of food and water with him if he were walking.

Ya but it wouldn't take 10 days to walk that far. Maybe 5 days walking for 4-5 hours each day. Walking at night would mean he could bring less water.

Its similar to the film "Flight of the Phoenix" where they use parts from their crashed plane wreck to build another plane/glider and get out of the desert.

PS-The original 1965 film was the best one, with some of the greatest actors the world has even known.:)

I saw an article in last weeks Sunday paper about this French guy, Emile Leray who after breaking down in the desert in his Citroen 2CV, stripped the car down and built a motorbike from its parts in order to get back to civilization. It happened in 1993 but photographs of it have turned up recently and so it's kind of in the news. It's an amazing story. It's a mad-looking "bike" but fair dues to the guy, it worked!

    Here's a link: http://www.odditycentral.com/news/real-life-macgyver-builds-working-motorcycle-out-of-car-that-broke-down-in-the-desert.html

Great guy & hats off to him, I reckon he would get on really well with Burt Munro of 'Worlds fastest Indian' fame.

But do you not think that the fact that he made a working motorbike from a wrecked car in a desert is not amazing? Doesn't matter how far from civilization he was, does it?

Actually it does, if he was in the middle of the Sahara then he would very likely have to have some mode of transport that could carry him a fair distance, but he was in Morocco not far from an Army checkpoint.
I just don't see the point, if you gave a 2CV to the locals they would surely just repair the car.
If you are stuck in Morocco, 30km from a reasonable sized Town then you can just walk out, no need to mess around building a motorbike from a wrecked vehicle.
I just get a bit suspicious when the guys own website (selling T-shirts and caps;)) also has a page detailing how he built a Boat out of a 2CV in Mali.
This is just self publicising on a grand scale.
