3 ties to be played tomorrow in the 1st qualifying round.

With some intrest in one team from the Island

F91 Dudelange (LUX) V Tre Penne (San Marino)
    Valletta (Malta) V Lusitanos (Andorra)
Linfield (NIR) V B36 Torshavn (Faroe Islands)

Would Borussia Dortmund be top seeds or will they be able to be drawn in groups with top seeds again?

After a poor CL showing last year, they'll be no better than before. Possibly worse.

I fondly remeber liverpools tie vs. tns in the first round a few years back :pac:

    Two quick questions:

    1) Why don't Liechenstein have a team in the comp?

    2) Howlikely is it for Motherwell to progress?

They'll be 3rd of 4th seeds, depending on the teams who are yet to qualify.

So, yeah, they'll have another tough group.

3rd question. Chelsea have been placed straight into the group stages whereas Spurs would have been in the last qualifying round. Whose place did Chelsea take ?

Check first line of distribution, it says bout Portugal and Russia having teams promoted through the rankings. Would it be Spartak who took the hit?

Also, why do Norway get an automatic team in the group stages?

    Didn't know that bout Liechenstein.

Like the second one. Hope they shock people, get loads of money, and give Celtic a run for the league.

They have a national cup so they have teams in the Europa thingy but their clubs play in the Swiss leagues.

Maybe in a few seasons time Motherwell v the Accies will be the new Old Firm;)

In the space of that 10 minute penalty shoot-out, Belgiums representative Anderlecht went from being qualified for the group stage to being demoted to the 3rd round of qualifying via the Champions route, and will have to win two ties to qualify.

Not as bad as Spurs' fate but still pretty bad

Liechtenstein only have one professional team, FC Vaduz who play in the Swiss Challenge league (second tier). They've qualified for Europe every year since God knows when through winning the Liechtenstein cup.

Not this year though, the qualifier is Eschen/Mauren from the fourth Swiss tier

what happens if Swansea qualify for the champions league?

And.... could Swansea have a reserve team in the welsh leagues?

Same as Fc Vaduz, they can't qualify through the league, only their own domestic cup.

If Cardiff had won the FA Cup in 2008 they wouldn't have qualified for the UEFA Cup.

    thats what i thought...If i were swansea:

1 Enter reserve team into Welsh Premier
    2. Win league
    3. Enter Premier League Squad into Champions league.
    4 Qualify for Group Stage
    5 Profit

It's kind of sad to see that the Irish league is so bad that their representative starts in the very first round with the likes of San Marino.

At least it gives Linfield a chance to win a Champions League tie for the first time.

Swansea will represent the league they play in.
If Swansea qualify for Europe through the League or FA Cup they will play representing England just the same like any of their rivals.

Derry City FC would be a regular qualifier for Europe already, representing the League they play in.

It was reported otherwise when Cardiff had a possibility of getting into Europe earlier in the season.

So by that there a chance a group of champions could be drawn

    Real Madrid
    Manchester City
    Juventus
    Montpellier

That has since be cleared up since any Welsh team now playing in the English league can not enter the Welsh Cup

If Cardiff had of beaten Liverpool in the League Cup this past season they would have been in the Europa League representing the English FA

What's so funny about it? A Man United or Chelsea match will guarantee them a couple of hundred thousand people watching the game. A Rovers match wouldn't get them anywhere even close to that number. Money talks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,597 ✭✭✭dan1895

The real funny thing would be that rte would have to show Rovers as the home broadcaster of the Champions League.

They dont give monkeys about Europe.
    Thomas Kilfeather ‏@TomKilfeather

FK Shkendija play Portadown in a few mins and Ports have only 3 subs and no reserve keeper. I think FK Shkendija-1 is a bit of value@ 1.90

    Why bother tbh ?

Surely Rovers playing against a major European team would attract as many if not more viewers than Man U. Would not the whole of Ireland get behind its representative?

    Seriously ? - ok then

Would they not take national pride in a club from their country doing well in Europe ? Do these Man U and Liverpool fans not support the Republic ?

They have to figure out how not to get thumped 4-0 by Bohs before they even consider actually winning their first qualifying game.

Ports drew 0-0 away to FK Shkëndija 79 in Kumanovo, Macedonia.

Champions League qualifier Linfield v. B36 Thorshavn (Faroe Islands) on now.
At least one International from each side Peter Thompson (Northern Ireland) and Suni Olsen (Faroe Islands)

    BTW in the Europa Cup

Pats are down to play one of the following Zimbru Chisinau, JJK Jyväskylä, IBV Vestmannaeyjar, Portadown, Gandzasar Kapan, La Fiorita

Bohs - FK Siauliai, Crusaders Belfast, Thór Akureyri, NSI Runavik, Cefn Druids

CL - Rovers - FC Basel, FC Salzburg, Helsingborg IF, FK Ventspils, HJK Helsinki, Ekranas Panevezys (Rovers were unseeded unlike Bohs and Pats)

That draw was made days ago.

Pats play IBV for the second year in a row. They'll know a bit about them.

Bohs play Thor (an Icelandic 2nd tier team who are they by virtue of a cup run)

Rovers got Ekranas, the best possible draw they could've hoped for.

Funnily enough Ive seen Ekranas twice in action in the flesh! Once in Panevezys and once in Cork. City knocked them out. They were no great shakes at the time although it was a good while a go.

BTW Ekranas just means Lightbulb or Light.
