Capacity needed?

    Hi all.

Just a quick question for someone here who I'm hoping will be able to help me out.

My current broadband provider is Vodafone prepay 10Gb per month allowance.

I am starting an online college course in mid september and was wondering how much download capacity I would need. Course is delivered 2 hours 2 night per week. So I would need 4 hours per week or 16 hours per month. Would 10Gb be enough for me? If not I can move over to O2 who give 15Gb per month. Would this be enough?

I cannot get landline based Broadband as the local exchange is not BB enabled. I cannot get Wimax as the transmission towers are on a hill I do not have LOS to. So my only options are

1 : Stay with mobile with my 10/15Gb if its sufficent
2 : Go to Satellite broadband and spend €80 per month with a €250 installation fee and a 24 month contract.

    Any thoughts?

    I'm in Wexford BTW......

Neither of those two options could possibly be considered as broadband by any stretch of the imagination...

    There's always Carnsore Brodband http://www.carnsorebroadband.com/
    or
    Permanet http://www.permanet.ie
    or
    Wicklow Broadband http://www.wicklowbroadband.com

Try one of those and see if they offer service in your area

I do not have Line Of Sight to Forth Mountain.

They all have their cell sites on Forth.

Have you any thoughts on what DL limits I would need for the amount of video that I need to avail of per month? Would 10 or 15Gb be enough.

    As a post script :

The video tutorials will NOT need to be fully downloaded. It streaming. That should make it less data intensive?

Streaming is downloading without keeping a copy

IMO it would be better to get download links to the videos ( if possible ) rather than rely on a stream. What if you lose your connection and have to restart the stream ? You'd end up using more bandwidth than intended.

With download links, and files, plus a download manager you will be able to see how much your downloading and not go over limit.

Is this a live online stream ?

Could be but that's a hard question to answer...it's like asking how long is a bit of string, it depends on the content of the course.

Mobile caps a fairly paltry but at least they are better than satellite caps

Possible to mount the antenna on a frame to elevate it a few meters(probably need PP for this though...)

Yea its a live online stream. Some of the content will be video and some of it will be graphics like a power point presentation. More power point than video I expect.

Would need to be around 20 metres. Would cost a fortune.

Issue sorted. Contacted the college with whom I will complete my course. They tell me that in total per month the 4 hours of video per week will consume around 3.5 - 5 Gb. Job done. Happy days. Thanks for all the comments and replies.
