I'm hoping to do this in September. Anyone want to share their experiences of the course? Particularly the maths part is it very difficult?

Oh and anyone else hoping to do this course in September let me know too! :D

Hi there! Just after finishing my first year in EPL so hopefully I can help you :).

I really enjoy the course. I liked how we did bits of each topic, the overall pace wasn't bad and the workload certainly isn't the worst if you keep on top of things. There are assignments (mostly essays) that you'll have to do over the year but again it's grand if you just keep on top of it and keep attending the lectures. The timetable isn't bad either, you'll find yourself doing about 15 or 16 hours a week in lectures/tutorials.

With regards to maths specifically, that was a stumbling block for some people this year. The module is 85% exam based and 15% CA. The 15% CA comes from 10 online homeworks over the weeks, each one worth 1.5%. The exam was made up of two parts: section A was MCQs and section B was standard questions. There are two maths lectures and one tutorial each week. It's really difficult to say that it's easy or hard because it's quite different to LC maths. The maths module starts off with things very similar to LC maths, and looks deceptively easy at the beginning but after a week or so it gets into new concepts. If you're willing to go to lectures, do the homework, do the tutorial work and work at it you should get through it though :).

If you've any more specific questions or maybe want to know a bit more about the type of things we study/assignments/types of maths questions, just let me know :D.

    Hi,
I am just after finishing the course this year. I can safely say that the maths is not very difficult, if you spend time doing the work. In third year, you can chose topics you like and what you want to specialise in. So if you really don't like maths/economics, you can choose to drop it completely. I started out in first year hating economics and I failed it. However, in the end, I ended up specialising in it. All I can say to you, is go to lectures and put the work in and you'll be fine. Take it from someone that sucks at maths! :P

    I hope that helps.

    Christine. :)

Thanks, you're the first person to give me hope regarding the maths side of the course! I only did ordinary level for the leaving cert and I'd expect only a grade c, do you think I could still manage? Very worried that I'll be failing the whole course if I can't get my head around a small bit of maths.

I did ordinary maths too and I got a B1 so I think you'll be grand. I also had to get grinds in it, so that's saying something. I was really worried about doing the course as well because I had never studied economics before. It does get easier after first year, there's not as much maths.
