Pornography to blame for girls rape in todays society?Change of culture?Your thoughts

The 14 year–old, who was a family friend and neighbour, had been asked to look after the girl. He tied an apron round her face and performed a sex act on her.

The girl later told her father that the teenager led her to believe he was going to feed her a chocolate.

The victim's mother, who said her daugher "knows what happened was something horrible", has now criticised the judge for "making a cheap point about pornography" in sentencing.

She believes the sentence "just isn't enough", adding it sent the "wrong message to people - that you can do something like that a get such a light punishment".

"The judge was more concerned with justifying the sentence by making a cheap point about pornography. It was really cheap to use that as an excuse for what the boy did," she said.

“The sentence isn’t enough. He should be punished. His family were told to expect a three-year custodial sentence so we were shocked when he didn’t get one.

I think its more reported, now than it was in the past. And there are more humans on the planet so more chance for weirdos in the world.

We seem to have an obsession with disregarding personal responsibility there is always 'a reason' why some people are broken. Genetics surely has some part to play.

I do note though there is a change in culture,it seems to produce a lot more shallow people, who only care about media, and porn, years ago it used to be innocent enough reading magazines to get your thrillls now its pornography, video taping sex, which a lot of kids do now, they video tape their gang rapes,is it where they could get their ideas,if they are that way minded?

Porn has about as much to do with rape as video games do with mass violence IMO.

    Watching porn =/= potential rapist.

And computer games or movies cause violence... I think it is ridiculous to blame porn or similar and has a lot more to do with the fact that sexual education is still very limited.

    Porn invented sex.

    Mortal Kombat invented rape.

i dont see anything about gang rape on the rise in that article... not disputing it either just saying is all.

i think porn may desensitise some young adults into treating women badly or give them an expectation of what sex should be but not encourage them to rape people imo. Porn maybe like alcohol most of the users handle it responsibly but some do not, same could be said for violent movies, video games... just a cop out really.

anyways rapists have been around alot longer than the internet porn ect and probably happened more frequently in years gone before too.

Porn and video games just give sick cnuts different ideas on how to unleash their sickness. They're not a cause so much as an influence along the way.

Porn though is sexualising our children and young teenagers, there is a pressure out there to have sex at an early age,and to be seen as the one who scores a lot,i know a lot of this you could say has been around, but porn does change our behaviour to sex..

The case proves that the judge is a dick more than it proves anything else.

The individual should always take responsibility.

Absolutely. Do the crime, do the time.
Along with access to porn is massive access on what is right and wrong in this world.
There is no excuse for lack or self control or ignorance in this day and age.

Yeah, 20 years ago when I was a boy there was none of this.

    Or...there was. Loads of it.

How would you know this? In fact, I don't think gang rape is even used as a gang initiation (activity? wtf do you even call it?) in Ireland

Irish judges are very aware of pornography (especially of the kiddie kind)....

Do google it a little more, but a warning - the case won't cheer you up.

I think it's absolutely idiotic to pretend that the ease of access and proliferation of hardcore porn being consumed by younger people often times in puberty, sometimes before it, on mobile phones, unmonitored computers etc does not have an affect on them.

It doesn't make them all a rapist, or anything of the sort, but it's ridiculous to suggest to doesn't influence attitudes and perceptions. Adults are easily manipulated through the media, yet for some reason many people refuse to accept that young people awash with hormones and oftentimes confused enough about sex and sexuality as it is, could be influenced by porn.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,678 ✭✭✭I Heart Internet

I don't think anyone is suggesting it doesn't have an effect Prinz - possibly a large effect but the notion of it turning swarms of kids into rapists is media scaremongering.

That was a silly headline dreamt up by the examiner when they got an Irish "expert" to mutter something vaguely affirmative about a study being carried out in the UK - an entirely different jurisdiction. It was a non story but gave a earth-shattering headline for parents of teens.

    That is not evidence.

Is that the reason you feel the urge to arbitrarily put "cock" into sentences.

Maybe you should watch less porn do.

All the findings are British stats... Overblown tabloid trash to be honest (headline in particular), gang rape is not becoming a 'norm' in Ireland....

Seems like a very serious single case. I note the accused are described as "men" not teens or youths....

    Qoute from the judge
The judge said: "You have not shown any sexual interest in children.

"I'm satisfied it was impulsive and I believe you have become sexualised by your exposure to and the corruption of pornography. Your exposure at such a young age has ended in tragedy. It was the fault of the world and society."

The word corruption makes his whole sentencing very, very suspicious. I'd love to know more about his past, religious beliefs, political affiliation, so on so forth.

I don't really give any credence to people who look at the past in rose tinted glasses.

Or you could say that porn being more readily available than before should have more parent awareness/ involvement than ever before.....which it's not.

Time to work on the solution instead of some finding a particular symptom to point the finger of blame at & being done with it.

Takes a village to raise a child but apparently only one internet to destroy one...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,572 ✭✭✭✭brummytom

    Ridiculous.

99% of people watch porn, 99.9999% of people have sexual urges. Most people can control those urges, whether they watch porn or not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭Corkfeen

This topic is reminiscent of the days when Child's Play got blamed for the death of James Bulger... And guess what, it wasn't the movie's fault....

On the actual article that the OP refered to - for what it's worth, as 10000% appalling and wrong as the teenagers act was and regardless of the role (or otherwise...I suspect it did have some bearing) of the kids exposure to online porn, I think the judge got it right.

Nothing could be gained by sending the kid to prison.

I stumbled on teens gang raping this morning on my way to work. Thought they were congregating before some exam (forgetting it is July and the year is flying) when i saw one bare teenage arse bobbing up and down between some spindly legs with tights hanging off the end of one foot.
Had gone too far to turn away so slowly made my way past. Big crowd of them taping it on their phones. Shower of scamps. Fourth morning this week i've seen it.
