Trying to remember the name of a sci-fi book I read years ago. The main thing I remember is that contrary to the normal way of things, in this, humankind are the advanced race, and the alien race are the up and comers. The learn faster than us so people are prohibited from teaching them anything useful. Pretty sure they were also quite violent but after first contact had stopped fighting amongst themselves to concentrate on learning all they could.
    Any help appreciated!

dragon's egg by robert forward would fit most of that description, but i doubt that's how you would have described it. Anyway, that's what it reminded me of and tought i'd recommend it anyway!! :D

It could also be Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card, it's the sequel to Ender's Game.

It's not Dragon's Egg though it sounds interesting and i've added it to me to read list!
Not Speaker for the Dead either, I remember it as being more "actiony" that that was.
    Thanks though both of you.

Would it be possible that you are referring to this book -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mote_in_God%27s_Eye

Another one to add to the "To Read" list, but not it either. It was more space opera than hard sci-fi. Thanks anyway!
