    Hi Folks,

I do all the development for my own website, since I started several years ago, I've used a handy little FTP program called FTP Commander. It's worked fine for me over the years for file transfers, the only thing that annoys me about it is that it times out if not used for about 2-3 minutes so you have to reconnect after that time to upload files again.

There are loads of free programs out there, just wondering what other folks use, might try something else but don't want to have to go through dozens of trials to find something that just stays awake and lets me transfer files!

    Hugs & kisses!

    HFC

FileZilla which I assume most people use

I didn't look very far when I first looked for an FTP client :P

EDIT: Trying out Cyberduck now. Couldn't pass up on a name like that :D

Filezilla is decent as above poster said. Also notepad++ has an ftp section on it which is really handy cause u can work on the file and without haveing to go to another application you can just drop it where ever you want.

Didn't use it in awhile, but I found WinSCP easy to use

Do people still use FTP? I wouldn't let one of my servers have FTP open for any reason, although I've never bought a slice of a hosted server before this may be the norm?? Seems a bit insecure to me though

I've used loads over the years, but FileZilla is the best.

Another vote for FileZilla here. It's cross-platform, easy to use and you can't beat the price.

    Command line. :o

Filezilla, grudgingly. It's a great program but I don't like the author's attitude to security.

(If anyone knows of a good fork that includes encrypted passwords, let me know).

scp or sftp would be much more secure, however some CMS require plain ole ftp. The old security vs useability trade-off.

Are we really still transferring files manually?

I have my development folder synced with Dropbox. There's a command line version of Dropbox that runs on my server...

Work on local files, save, wait two seconds and woila!

Filezilla but also use solaris' ftp when feeling oldschool.

Filezilla or Notepad++, depending on what I'm working on.

I use FileZilla too. It's quick and easy to use.

I tried WinSCP before, and FileZilla seems to be faster than it...

Command line sftp is my favourite one

And if you break something locally?

And if you break something locally?

    Yup.

    Save, test, then deploy.

And if you break something locally?

    Dropbox keeps your file history.

For live sites, I use index2.php etc. to test before copying over to index.php.

That doesn't really cut it to be honest!

In defence of the indefensible, it's better than some folks using no source control whatsoever.
