Only looking for basic system, perhaps keypad on pillar outside and a few fobs for the cars..the gates are wooden with steal bars frame, hung on normal block pillars.i have wires running out to both pillars put in by my electrician when building house..need a rough price for equipment and install? And and good reasonable companies around south west recommendations

I noticed you have mentioned the gates have a metal frame with wood attached, these can work like sails.Tell me, how exposed is the site regarding wind.
Also you did run out cables, by any chance has anyone fitted motor foundation boxes.
When you say Southwest, is that Tallaght as in Dublin or West Cork/ Kerry as in Ireland?

Basically I am trying to establish if electro mechanical motors, which are cheaper, will be able for your gates. If not then you may have to look at other options.

The wind does blow around here allright but guy putting in gates left gaps between each line of wood to alleviate this, supposedly....
No just cables run out nothing else.
Sorry by southwest I mean , Ireland, Kerry area

I don't really have an idea of the weight to b honest..they area only composed of wood with metal bars as frame and spikes on top ..they are 6.5ft high in middle down to bout 5ft against pillar and around 7ft wide

A pic would be great . Are you installing yourself ? ( cheaper ) or looking for a company to install them

I sent you a PM, did you get it?

In general just to get the ball rolling for you expect to pay anything from €2,000 to € 3,000.......there is a €1,000 difference, that is why we are so hungry for further information.

By all means send on a pic, this will 'speak a thousand words' think of it as Euro's :D

I have seen over ground kits for as little as 1200-1500 installed with a fairly basic keypad and intercom. Gate kit quoted was bft which isn't bad

When u say installing myself , do u mean I buy equipment online or somewhere and get an electrician to install ? I don't really care how they install obviously as long as they work ok and obviously as cheap as possible
I sort pics tonight and post

Ya basic will do , those prices seem reasonable ..can u give any more Info like where purchased kit? Who done install ?
I don't really care about intercom , no particular need .just keypad and few fobs wud suffice really

By self install I mean buy the kit online and install them your self . An over ground kit would be easiest . :) .
    Regarding your question on price
I was given a quote of €1500 without a keypad to have a fadini hydraulic ram kit installed as the wires are already there.

Looks like you'll have to go for an articulated arm kit. Something like this

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭Thunderbird2

+1 for the articulated arm . The easiest kit for self install

I need 2 of these I persume for each gate? Would a competent electrician install these or wud I need more of a specialist ?

Personally I wouldn't go with an electrician . I'd do it myself or have someone who fits them for a living do it . A 24v version is easy to install yourself as the cables are colour coded and it's safer to operate . The hardest part would be mounting the operator to the piller and gate

Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated..1 final query..if I get 2 of those arms, one for each gate, I persume they can be wired so that one fob control both gates? I don't want to be clicking 2 different fobs to open each gate?

That would be the norm, yes.

I am thinking of installing something similar, does anyone know are sliding gates are cheaper\better? I could do either 2 normal leaves opening or 1 large sliding.

Personally i think Swing gates look more attractive .
With sliding gates you can have a track or a huge counter weight .
Most automatic swing gates open faster and safer then sliding gates
Also with sliding gates you need to have a clear on on side

Sometimes its personal choice but mostly it is site specific.
