Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well said, I had a similar experience a few short weeks ago.
I brought up a subject about something that had happened on the news 2 days previous, I had done a search to see if there was any other threads about this subject so as not to be restarting an old subject and didnt find any.
I started the thread and within minutes I had 2 idiots posting smart comments that it was old news etc etc .
Some others came on and we had a decent discussion.
I posted a "Rude" comment back to the smart ass poster and hey presto it was I that got a 4 days ban from Boards.
When I argued with the Mod saying that Boards was getting to the stage where people cant be bothered posting new threads because you always have some smart ass lurking in the back ground just waiting to put your thread down or pass some smart comment, the mods reply was, that this was the nature of the After Hours forum.
Sorry but I thought it was an open forum where people can have a discussion about any topic they choose and if you dont like the thread you simply ignore it and move to one that you enjoy.

In fairness the mod has a point, AH is that type of board where you will get stupid replies, if you are looking for serious (mostly!) responses you are better posting in Politics. Personal abuse will be acted on everywhere on the site, even the Cuckoos Nest!

Yes. People on the internet do act different that they do in real life. Was just reading that legalese cannabis tread that is just under this one. I would imagine that most of them wouldn't shout out in favor in real life because doing so can cause many people to over react. I for example am pro legalization however I am very cautious on who I would tell in real life because I would fear that shouting out about it could cause me to lose my job / kicked out of college.

On the internet however there it is a different story. People can talk and discuss whatever people want without fear.

I just used cannabis as an example. If you are into gay porn or mad cat sex or whatever you good people of the internet might be interested in, you can talk about it with likeminded people on the internet without the social repercussions of real life

    O. P. Nobody in real life goes around saying what they think .First Rule of survival so Boards gives us all a chance to remove the veil or mask and say what we really think .That is healthy because in Ireland the hierarchy is usually long established in what ever company you join and only a fool says what he thinks or a fellah with a glock pistol ....the rest of us broach our opinions in careful terms most of the time ...and the fellah who orders you to say what you really think knows well what you really think he'd just love to take the head off you . There is no such thing as free speech ....there is always a price somehow .Good Catharsis Boards .

Anywho the question is, you say these people are hypocrites. For them to be hypocrites you need to know what they say online, and what they say in person. Do you know everyone on boards in real life? If not, you can't make a judgement on how different people act online.

I really wasn't trying to argue. I don't know where you came up with that. I didn't even tell you what I believe so you don't know whether I agree with or not. I'm just curious as to why you keep avoiding the question. It's odd on a discussion forum not to discuss

I'm basing it on the law of averages. There are so many people on boards who are so quick to judge that it simply cannot be what they are all like in real life. I believe that a certain percentage of people operate on a higher moral level online than they do in real life. You don't believe that is the case (I think) and you're entitled to your opinion. Of course I am presuming a lot, but it's the same level of presumption as say...me announcing that most of the people who watch the late late show think that it's rubbish.

There is of course another element to this that not many have touched on. Some people can say things online that they wouldn't dare say in real life. E.G if someone says something like "I haven't had sex with my wife in 3 years and that's why I cheated". The person may have very strong feelings about this but wouldn't be brave enough to express them in person. Online however, they may say something like -"you are a cheater OP, you made a solemn vow to your wife when you married her and you have broken that in the most vile way". Or something.

I think you know yourself that I'm right, but there is another rule to boards. No matter what the OP posts, if there is not a dissenting voice by the 3rd page someone has to post one.

I can see the point you are going for, but I don't think what you are on about is exclusive to the online environment. What I mean is that people can have certain expectations of themselves about situations that they don't live up to should the situation come up.

As in, people respond/adapt to situations differently than they presume they will. This presumption when played out in a forum leads people to respond to things in whatever way seems best to them. I tend to take a charitable interpretation of it being how a person would/does respond or how they wish they would respond.

The online environment allows people to say things differently than in real life as people have more time to formulate lulzy comments that they might not come up with off the cuff.
There is of course another element to this that not many have touched on. Some people can say things online that they wouldn't dare say in real life.
Actually, this has been brought up a number of times.
I think you know yourself that I'm right, but there is another rule to boards. No matter what the OP posts, if there is not a dissenting voice by the 3rd page someone has to post one.
Generally the dissenting voice is in the first response. Certainly in the first 10.

This is similar to the phenomenon of Internet pedantry. Write a letter or type an email to someone with a few minor errors.... no harm done, what does it matter anyway. Write a post or better yet start a thread with a few errors....

"OP, YOU 'AVE NOT COMPLIED WITH THE CORRECT GRAMMATICAL CORRECTNESS LAWS, YOU VILL COMPLY! RESISTANCE IZ FUTILE!"

Anonymity brings out the cúnt is people, simple as.

I don't see anybody as hypocrites. Firstly you don't walk up to people and ask their opinion. Go online and post something and you are asking for opinion.
Your circle of friends are likely to be of similar views. This means you are unlikely to actually get a world view. Effectively they already agree with you as friends.
Allowances are made for friends. People bite their tongue or accept it as a friend.

You are more likely to get honesty from the stranger online. The reality is if people are hypocritical it is likely they are doing it to your face and not online. It is the lack of understanding of personal interactions that makes people think the world sees things like you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,716 ✭✭✭Feisar

Sure this sort of stuff happens all the time. I've often relayed a story back to someone and their adamant response would be dramatic, "jaysus I'd have... ..."

Since none of my friends have been done for assault I'm pretty sure that no they would not have taken that course of action.

I heard the same crap for years working in bars of how such and such would have "dragged/pulled you out over the counter". It never happened.

First they came for the socialists...

You really can't assume how people act in real life. It's a bit like seeing someone drinking buckfast in the street and thinking they're a scumbag when lots of Irish young people do it.

Also the assumption once again that most people who watch the Late Late Show think it's rubbish is wrong. People who think it's rubbish switch channel.

If you said something online about a person, then in real life you would have no problem saying it to their face?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

Of course. But that wasn't really the point of my original post.

For example, I post a lot on the Waterford forum...almost all of them know who I am in real life and I know a lot of them. If I was to say something to them it's pretty much the same as real life. All irrelevant to my original point.

What I'm saying is that, online, a lot of people seem to exist on a higher moral high ground than they do "offline". I see examples of it everyday on this forum. In fact, some people are so far removed from their real life selves that they probably wouldn't even recognise each other. (this is based on real examples but I could also generalise about this and not be too far wrong)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 246 ✭✭Kamjana

You've been active here enough to know that is how things go on this forum. People will be brought to task for anything that can be deemed hypocritical. A thread designed to point out hypocrisy makes this so that someone with as many posts as you was always going to be caught out for something.

Though I can say I've never been motivated to look through someones post history. I prefer to challenge the arguments presented in other ways.

Ah yeah, I don't mind that. But this guy is actually my stalker. He used to follow my posts around on the waterford forum just basically disagreeing with everything I said, or abusing me. He was then banned and re-regged as his current name. I'm quite proud tbh.
