    Hi all quick question,

Can Garda Safety Camera Vans be in locations other than the areas specified on the Garda website?

I was driving to work this morning and I'm pretty sure I passed one, It didn't look like the speed vans on the Garda website, with the camera logos on it. But it was empty on the side of the road with just two plain Garda Stickers on it (not a normal luminous Garda van) and ahead of it was a huge flashing sign saying slow down.

I didn't notice it until I was pretty much beside it so I don't even know what speed I was doing.

Would this be a Speed Van? I'm guessing it was, but according to the Garda.ie website the nearest Safety Camera location is pretty much two miles away on a different road..

Garda Vans are called GATSO vans and can be anywhere they want.

There's a thread on Speed Cameras / Vans here

    Thanks for the reply Antares.

So after looking through the suggested thread chances are the Garda Van I seen this morning could have been a speed trap..

    Could well have been.

They've been tagging them lately with Garda Logos though. Was there on your van?

Yeah it was just a plain white van, similar to a transit, with one Garda symbol on the side :( just hope I wasn't going over the limit but probably was! Guess I'll know in the next few days

They are actually called ROBOT vans

All the gatso vans were decommissioned in 2008

But the robot, looks, and performs differently.
    Different specs
    Different freq
    Different capabilities
    Different range
    Different beam divergence
    Different machine

    Snickers/marathon..
    Different wrapper

It's like comparing nuts and speed cams... Completely different things

And is any of that really pertinent to the OP's query?

Does the OP really care what the Specifications, Frequency, Capabilities, Range etc are?

The consequence of being caught is the same.... You get points and a fine.
