clouds with a light brown kind of colour on them.

    Out northwest of athlone right now and for the last 45 mins or so. Not sure exactly what is going on but the sky where there are clear patches is a luminuscent green and the upper layer of clouds are milk chocolate brown. Cant be northern lights and too high up to be noctilicent cloud? But really gnarly kind of colors.

    Phone camera not good enough to get a picture.

    just some trick of the setting sun or something even awesomer?

    From what you describe, sounds like noctilicent cloud. It is the season.

    It's not noctilucent clouds, it's to do with the setting sun. The sky was greenish due to scattering of those shorter wavelengths in the upper levels of the atmosphere where the sun was still shining. Down lower, where the sun was much lower in the sky, the longer wavelengths (orange and red) are scattered and are more noticeble to the human eye, hence that's what you saw in the clouds.
