Encroaching Blackthorns

I've areas where machinary can't safely travel. It's being slowly taken over with blackthorns. I've cut some of them with a strimmer and brushcutter attachment, but it's a divil of a job. Is there anything I can use to keep the beggers from coming back? I'm going to push the cuttings into the hedges with a fork (by hand!) the next time it stops raining! Any ideas how I can kill them before they kill me??

If they are small spray with a brushwood killer. You may have to repeat 3 or four times. Use one that will not kill grass and after a while the grass will take over.
