If they are actually cutting people off then they might not even be able to hear the reading they paid so much for because they are encouraged to turn down the TV

I think it's more a case of cutting sound before it goes to on-duty-psychic and live feed at the discretion of production.
The local broadcaster may be a bit more active in that respect as a result of a call last week.
