jesus christ, jimmy magee is poison, worst commentator ever, such nonsense comes out of the mans mouth, the judges are spread geographically around the ring ,what next, haha

You can retire Mick Dowling too. His comment about JJ Nevin being "a good thinker - that's thinker with a TH" was in very poor taste and Tracey Piggott should really have apologised as I think it was meant as a joke rather than simply trying to dig himself out of a hole.

He has such a snide attitude that overshadows his half-decent analysis at times.

hes always got on my wick, hes a pain in the arse him and your man that does the athletics analysis.

You can't have instant scoring as the two judges who's score deviate most at the end of round are discounted and the other three are averaged

surely in this day and age the technology would be there to do this within a few seconds. i find it much better having the scores in view during the fight

Worst thing so far is that he thinks the second round score are the total scores.

O'Neill was 4-3 up after round 1, after round 2 Jimmy Announced that it was now 8-2, when O'Neill had in fact won the round 8-2 for a 12-5 total. (Did Jimmy think they had actually deducted a point from the Nigerian?)

He did the exact same thing in the Nevin fight.

how can you remove the round scores if the round has not finished?

Exactly, the problem that could occur here is the scores jumping all over the place as the highest scoring judge and lowest scoring judges are removed as the play goes and changes. You could be left with a situation where a boxer lands a blow, one of the judge scores it, becomes the highest judge because of this and the boxer actually loses a point as the judge that previously was the highest scoring judge had scored less points for that fighter.

eg. fighter is winning 5-3, lands a solid blow, goes down to 4-3. The general public would go fecking mental at this and really struggle to get their heads around it. 'How did he lose a point for landing a punch, it's stupid' etc etc.
Better to not show the scores till they are tallied at the end of a round.

I like the system. It adds a bit a drama and lets you give your own appraisal of a round like in the pro game.

the scores are averaged after each round and recorded, so individual hits can't be shown as it's not like the old system where you scored your point if 3 judges seen the hit.

The system is quite good, and working well IMO. Certainly encourages offensive boxing, unlike the last system which was a travesty.

ye sorry that was what i meant in the part of scores visible something like the old system

i disagree, back in the old system there used to be a bit of excitement in the last round if a boxer needed to play catch up to win, he'd be going all out to try and win.

The old system was terrible, the scores been shown was nice but in the new system there is no score till after the round so nothing to put up bar the last rounds score.

and his opponent would be running like there was a hungry pack of lions after him, and not concerned at all with scoring points himself. That certainly wasn't exciting to watch and imo there's a lot less of it now when the fighter can't see the score as the final round progresses, only knowing the score at the end of the previous round.

and the same opponent being put on his arse because he was on the backfoot too much

I'm a big proponent of the new system. The old one was crap.

You talk of excitement. The old system was a purely defensive system and rewarded boxers for coming forward with their hands up and throwing the odd punch. This is why Barnes was so successful, the new system doesn't suit him as much. Now you actually get rewarded for throwing combos.

that didnt show today there was plenty of connecting shots in several fights and the scoring wasnt high at the end of the round

I don't think I can remember that happening even once at International level.
Not when the fighter was running cause they were well ahead anyway.

I remember Rau'shee Warren losing a decision when he thought he was ahead and ran like crazy only to look at the score at the end and see he'd lost (you really think he'd have glanced at the score board once to make sure).

If Nevin medals he'll have done it the hard way. Bantamweight is possibly the most talented weight class there currently is in the amateur game, and the draw sheet has probably thrown up the most lob sided draw of any weight class in the Olympics.
Just to medal Nevin has to beat the Kazahk Abutalipov in his next fight. Abutalipov is a 2008 Olympian, and won the most recent World Series of Boxing Bantamweight division (which is how he qualified).

After that he'd have to beat the winner of Oscar Valdez and Anvar Yunusov. Valdez who was the youngest boxer at the last Olympics, and won a bronze at Featherweight in the 2009 World Championships. He's a terrific fighter and brings and all action come forward style typical of a Mexican, he's a little slow of foot but possesses terrific timing to help counteract this.
Yunusov is a bronze medal winner at the last World Championships and the reigning Asian champion. Yunusov is a quick handed southpaw, with good reflexes and timing, him vs Valdez should be a cracker but I'm picking the Mexican to take it.

Anyway if he were to win those fights to make the final he'd have to beat one of Lazaro Alvarez (reigning World champion), Joseph Diaz (impressive US champion who probably would have had more international success were he not just 18 years old), Sergey Vodopyanov (former World champion at Bantamweight and Silver medallist at Featherweight) and Brazilian Robenilson Vieira (2008 Olympian, looks a decent fighter, but probably not as good as the other 3).

Meanwhile on the other side of the draw we have Luke Campbell, and 2009 World champion Dalakliev from Bulgaria, and that's about it...., 6 of the 8 World quarter finalists in one side of the draw, and 8 of the 10 best fighters at the weight imo on one side of the draw. Two very good fighter in Shiva Thapa and Shayimov from Uzbekistan have already been knocked out on that side, but with so many top class fighter obviously some good ones had to go early.

Just a shame really it's not a bit better spread out.

Good stuff Big Ears. I fancy Yunusov to beat Valdez though.

Adam Nolan fights tonight against Carlos Sanchez Estacio at 10:15pm. Nolan is 6 foot, while Estacio is only 5'7". 69KG weight class.

Can't seem to find a schedule for the rest of the upcoming fights.

It's really annoying there's no scores on the screen during the bouts. They used to show them before didn't they? Even if they were to show the scores from the previous round it would be handy.

They do show the scores of the previous round, between rounds.

Wouldn't mind seeing them go at it in a 5 round WSB type fight, terrific bout and a deserving winner. Ramirez carries quite a lot of power imo

All he talks about is stats and loves showing off.
