stay away from the downtowner inn just you tube worst hostel in canada, other ones ive stayed in are th h.i hostel, neil wyack which were'nt bad and were fairly central ive heard good things about the canadiana but to be honest hostels here are no way on a par with australia id advise you to get an apartment sorted quick as possible as there fairly overpriced too

International backpackers hostel (on King and Spadina - dead central) is the best hostel by far. The Canadian Hostel is crap and boring. I stayed in Canadian and met no one, buddies stayed in the other one, which has a bar and loads of socialising and met loads of people who knew for entire stay.

The bar at the hostel at King & Spadina is pretty fun. http://globalbackpackers.com/bar-2/

I'd advise against that place, Canadiana or HI for me. Sure, it has a bar but it's not exactly cheap, and downtown toronto isn't short of bars. Also the bar is open to the public, you don't need to be staying there :P

Also the face they have a bar means you aparently can't bring your own alcohol in.

I never actually stayed at the hostel, but just had some fun at the bar. So whether you stay there or not even at a hostel at all, still recommend that bar.

Blood on the sheets , blood on the walls , place stank of chip fat, absolutely rank communual showers permanently without bog roll and two weeks worth of scratching from bed bugs. Oh, and the heating didnt work , which is kinda a problem in a Toronto February.

I think that was all that was missing tbh. The place certainly stank as if someone had died in it :(

I stayed in the Global Backpackers for one night last year and it was a ****hole. I immediately checked out and went to the Canadiana.
The Canadiana is much more friendly and you can bring your own drink in and there's usually something organised if you want to go out. The bar in the Global Backpackers is pretty good, so I actually stayed in the Canadiana but found myself going to the bar in Global Backpackers.
The rooms were never cleaned, the showers didn't work and the staff were unhelpful. Stay in the Canadiana if you want somewhere decent.
