Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm bloody fed up with the way the www and the companies which seem to control it are now are behaving.

About 13 years ago I marvelled at this new internet thing and the freedoms and possibilities it might bring. I even created my Hotmail account at the time even though I didn't have a computer.

About 7 years ago I got my first computer and ISP. I remember my first on-line transaction, my car licence. Using my Lazer to pay and the Tax Disc arriving on my hall floor a couple of days later. I was smitten. I then put what seemed like my whole life on line. I loved the anonymity and the ease of use with the basic security measures the companies used. I shouted from the rooftops that everyone should get on-line and transform their lives, but now here I am at this hour typing this s-h-i-t which is keeping me awake.............

It seems everything has now got so bloody over complicated. The on-line industry keeps spouting rubbish on so called 'privacy' issues- they don't bloody know what the meaning of the word is anymore.

That Hotmail account I mentioned earier. Microsoft are asking me all sorts of extra 'personal info' and unless I give it are trying to keep me from my emails ( i found away to dance around it and get in...for now). Did you know that to create a new Hotmail account they want your private home address..what in Gods name is that all about. Theres absolutely no bloody need for it.... I just de- registered all my ebilling for my utillities in case I do get locked out. I'm going back to paper!

Paypal won't let me top up my account now without me having to link my private bank account to my paypal account...again theres no bloody need to (go read some of the horror stories with those that have). why don't they make it optional, options are nice and friendly. I will not do it. It's been working very well for 4 years without that. So now no ebay for me and many other sites I used to purchase from. Their power is awsome.

It seems to me that the internet has now matured with 3/4 major players Microsoft, Google and the like. And that they seem to have carved up the market place for themselves. Now that they've got us they are 'locking us down and in' so to speak, insisting on and gathering more and more irrelevant personal information on us. And there seems no effective regulation watching them, Monopolies seem to be able to now thrive on the internet with no monitering or laws to protect us the customers. Its their way or no way now...not the freedom of 'your way' which the internet was once about!.

And the phenomenal rate of change with site layouts and usage etc is doing our heads in. What these 20-45 year old whiz kids running these companies are foregtting is that their customers are getting older and older and we oldies simply cannot keep up (we spend more time trying to understand changes on sites that we use regularly than doing what we want to do on them lol) and the greedy uncaring Global companies might one day get bitten when the oldies or others that have just had enough stop using the them.

The internet companies seem to be giving us more headaches and problems than the malicious hackers and spammers ever did.

Its got to the stage where I feel sick coming to my computer to do stuff now where it was once an absolute joy.

My windows XP computer is coming to the end of its life span...you know what I might just dump it and not get a new one.
I am so pissed off with it all.........feck em.

I'd say it might be on account of its spam filter which is fairly crap. Use Gmail as my primary now and love how much storage space it has, its spam filter, how you can send emails with bigger attachments.

I've been using hotmail more & more these days. Some great new features like aliases & sweep up & 25gb skydive. On the verge of ditching gmail because I hate that interface

Hotmail accounts are the most frequently hacked/compromised accounts in my experience.

Gmail has gone the way of the OPs complaints also - about a year ago it forced me to use my 'real name' or I would be locked out of its services. Not long after, Google Plus came in. Hmmm...

As much as they like to show off these features as security/privacy/customisation features to benefit the user, it is essentially about locking down the user to one service. At the moment, Facebook are covertly creating a kind of 'passport' for the internet, a centralised identity with which you will have to have to sign into many other services across the web. At the moment, the 'sign in with Facebook' features are generally optional, but eventually you'll notice more services insist you have a facebook account to use them - Spotify for example.

Why do people feel the need to post "too long. There's no way I'm reading all of that". If your time is so precious, why waste it further by clogging up the thread with your overt laziness or inability to read long pieces of literature.

Well, I've been happily using Hotmail for... 10 years+ (despite getting a gmail acc when it first showed up it never really grew on me)

I've never been hacked (is that a hotmail fault or a user fault to suggest it's the most hacked?), up until a year ago I can't remember ever getting spam and whilst I get a few now (not sure what changed) they all go into junk without fail.

I've heard the snorty 'you still use hotmail' so much but I really don't get it. It has never let me down and is straightforward.

When Gmail started up, it offered a crazy amount of storage more than Hotmail provides. I'm not sure exactly what the gap is now. I know that Gmail is now up to 10 GB.

    Edit: Impressive.
However, today in 2011 things are quite different; Hotmail now provides users with virtually unlimited storage for their emails and allows users to upload multiple attachments each up to 100MB. The site is now also 10 times faster than it was in 2006, this has been achieved through several different practices that I will talk about later. Hotmail is now very accessible on a wide range of mobile devices through any browser and also through native apps on all of the most popular mobile platforms.

I don't like how google do business so avoid them as much as possible. Facebook I can't abide so avoid them too. Apple with every year are becoming more like the **** they used to be on a high horse about. Microsoft, once the boogyman are less so these days IMHO. I have my own email address.

Name one monopoly on the internet? - the only thing that's close is Spotify needing a FB login as one user mentioned, & though they look like they're making themselves more readily bought, they're not the only social music platform.
inability to read long pieces of literature.

Literature might be pushing it a bit!

    Hotmail?

    OP should probably read this:
    http://theoatmeal.com/comics/email_address

I use hotmail as my primary account, and I'm a software developer who has done web design. I also use two gmail accounts, and two custom domains. Hotmail hasn't pissed me off as much as it has everyone else, it would seem. I've only got about 10 spam emails through to my inbox in the 10 years I've had the account, as far as I can remember.

I still use hotmail as my primary account. Can someone enlighten me as to why hotmail is now crap?

My Dad's hotmail account was hacked, my sisters too and when they tried get it unlocked they were asked for a contact mobile number and when they put theirs in they were told that it couldnt be sent to this as it didnt recognise the number, think it was due to it not being from the US. So they have both changed to Gmail now, losing all of thier contacts and emails in Hotmail, to sit there forever.

Plus there is the fact that Gmail is just better.

So far from what I can see it seems that because hotmail is old and not made by google it's somehow inferior. *shrugs*
