Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ireland "out-voted"???

Courtesy of votewatch.eu, the voting record of the member states in the Council of Ministers can now be seen. It shows the results of all votes from July 09 onwards.

So, given all the recent wailing about Ireland being "oppressed" by the rest of the EU, it shows us losing all the votes, right? No doubt, based on our media reports, the "evil" French are there leading the posse against us, right?

Well, actually no - not even close as can be seen in Ireland's record here.

Out of the total number of votes that we cast - 333 - we were in the majority in 324 of those, lost ZERO votes and abstained in 9 votes (which votewatch.eu oddly to my mind classifies as being a "minority position"). We also entered 20 statements about positions adopted by the Council - largely environment & public health related - which if I understand it correctly are "Umm, that is a good idea but we might have a bit of bother implementing it" statements.

The member states most likely to vote with us in the Council? France & Lithuania - a record which puts a lot of our media "analysis" about France out the window. The member states least likely to vote with us? The United Kingdom - a record which is overlooked by many of those doing the above media "analysis".

Oddly, though the record shows us as having not voted on 10 occasions (as opposed to abstaining) - which is fairly inexcusable as a Minister can nominate a Senior Diplomat to vote if they can't attend due to unavoidable reasons.

All in all, there would appear to be a distinct lack of foundation to the claims by various media pundits...
