Does the success of '50 Shades Of Grey' prove that every woman loves a bastard?

I work in a bookshop. I ****ing love the amount of women coming in to buy this book. I give them the aul sly look when I ask them do they want a bag for it. Of course you do, your an Irish woman. You'd probably wrap it in wallpaper if you could.

The success of it only proves that every woman loves to frig herself off

Yes, but I pretty certain most guys know that by now

I'd like to think that most women grow out of the "trying to fix the bad boy" phase, but maybe they don't. For me, books like that are the epitome of trash. Reading bad literature is as bad as not reading at all. And what makes it worse is that those books are aimed at women and happen to be among the most anti-woman literature out there - the whole idea of creating a fantasy man who also happens to be ridiculously dominant and the female character pathetically submissive is just feeding ideas about gender imbalance and sexual control. Sure, that would be fine if it was somehow integral to the story and was trying to make a statement (as in, the novel is set in a time when women and men were unequal, or it's set in some grim future where things are unequal again, or a domestic abuse situation or some such), but the fact that this sexually unbalanced relationship exists just to fulfill fantasy kinda makes me sad, as a woman. I don't mind reading books about women in difficult situations if the woman is a character I can admire, but the fact that these women in these kinds of novels tend to be so submissive and obedient and instead take the man's lead rather than doing their own thing is disheartening, especially in this day and age. It's crazy that decades ago when women endured far more hardship that the so called "chick-lit" author Jane Austen was writing strong female characters, and now today's authors who enjoy far more freedom and respect are writing female characters who don't know how to do anything without a man and are submissive and obedient in almost every way. It makes me worry for the young girls who read Twilight and get ideas about how they should act and be around men from it. Women need to quit feeding into this stuff. There are much better, stronger female characters to relate to out there; characters that really show what it means to be a woman.

That isn't even getting into the ideas of ideal masculinity that these books promote.

If you had read the books, you would know that the female character isn't actually submissive.

It's basically just a bit of fun, the storyline is just kind of thrown in around the sex but the sex gets you interested enough to keep reading ;)

    Don't over-analyse it, it's only fiction after all :)

I think it just proves that most people are sheep and don't want to be left out.

I've actually seen people on facebook say things like "I've no idea what it's about but I've ordered it, cant wait, excited !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):):):D:D"

Curiousity got the better of me. I read up on it and the author and then I downloaded a pdf of the first book and skimmed through it.

It's a twilight fan fiction. It's basically the twilight story but with the names and situation changed, and lots of sex and chains and stuff. Except it's very poorly written by a woman in her 50's with a poor grasp on the perfect blowjob.

Granted, I'm a straight guy in my mid 20's, I'm certainly not the target audience. But either is any woman under the age of 50 in my opinion.

You are a straight man and yet you know the plot of Twilight? :pac: Which beg the question, what is a woman in her 40s doing reading Twilight? I thought no girl over 17 even watches it.

Is there any site that has like a chapter or two serialised? I just want to see if it is as consistently semi literate as I have heard.

The generalisations of women is unbelievable here. no not every woman loves a bastard and not every woman is rushing out to read this. nor does every woman follow twilight. If people want to read this however, get of your high horses, its only a book and theres no harm in making your own mind up on something. I dont intend to read it but its the haters making more of a hype than the supporters in my opinion.

Did anyone say every single woman reads it. Generalisations are necessary to have discussions without using "on average" 50 times per paragraph for example.

I know an awful lot of women in their late twenties early thirties who get wet just mentioning Twilight. To them it has been more analysed and broken down than the Shakespeare play they had to study in school.

I kid you not a group of them had a get together/party to watch the latest trailer release...

Words cannot explain how f**king WEIRD women can be.

Jesus! Ireland must be going thru a boredom epidemic with unemployed people prepared to mull away the day reading/ watching any old shyte. Can only think of two women I know into that Twilight gash. And one of them is, as Alan Partridge would term her, mildly cretinous.

Compare that to this 50 Shades stuff, not sure I know a woman not reading it by now.

I think I can sum up all the threads on the topic for you: some like bastards, some don't. But mostly they just want a bloke to have a bit of confidence and assertiveness and to not be a doormat.

Think I saved a few posters the bother of writing an essay there. ;)

Absolutely! You hit the nail on the head :D

AhInFairness, I'd say a lot are caught up in the hype but the same can be said for popular movies/music etc.
Sometimes you just want a bit of brain fluff that will keep you occupied for a few hours. Not everyone want's to read award winning novels all of the time but if you did then I'd say you would be bitterly disappointed.
There's no denying it, she is not the best writer out there by a long shot.

Bubblypop, I'm off to google Nancy Friday, something tells me I have been rather sheltered when it comes to kinky reading material but I'm more than willing to change that!

I bought the first book months ago on Amazon, never heard of it or the Author before, didn't even realise there was a follow on from it.I enjoyed it and it left me wondering what became of the two. Then while shopping in Tesco I stumbled across the book with two follow ons....bought them of course.

All I can say is I shouldn't have bothered. I should have left it as a cliff hanger. The Authors style of writing isn't the best and some of the phrasing quite childish, boy God it gets so repetitive!!! I lost the will to live by book 3.It now sits gathering dust,I'm not sure what happens in the end....maybe Steele's eyelashes fall out....Grey starts to pull his trousers up!

All in all it has all become hype, not sure why I didn't think it was all that kinky tbh I've read kinkier;) Women who never lifted a book in their life are running out to get the book, it's just hype!

Might I add women like men who are sexually confident ....that is all ;)

Wet legs?? LOL (sorry I haven't heard phrases like this since I was in college!)

I think the target audience would be a little different, would it not?
Topless 16yo's do nothing for me.
How exactly could a 16yo (topless or not) dominate a non submissive girl (which Ana is supposed to be)
Even my imagination can't attempt to picture it without turning me off!

Yer man in one of the Twilight films was 16 during shooting. When the films were released there'd be the sad teenage girls queuing up but the sadder, well, more disturbing really, middle-aged women as well.
Also I've got better ones than "wet legs", just trying to keep it clean :pac:

I didn't read the books so I don't know what is in it but I understand that kink and fetish is involved.

I had an interest in kink and fetish from when I was really young and these thoughts were something that came with me into adulthood. I have some various fetish interests and with that I found a site online that helped me explore. The scene in ireland is fairly large.

The word 'play' is used on the scene for kink, fetish, bdsm going ons. I love being treated badly within play - smacked, beaten, reduced to tears, hair pulling, humiliated like being made to stand in the corner with my dirty knickers down and many more that would be too much to mention here.

All that excites me and makes me feel alive. But any badness outside from what's agreed - no way. Like respect goes a long way.

I had dealings with someone before who treated me horribily after a play session. He kept me waiting in suspense for something, a promise that he made, for nothing but lies and that knocked me sideways. I'm guessing it was a form of control on his behalf. Trying to control me and disort my mind after one play session. He could have took the night that we had together and left it at that but he took it upon himself to play with my head. Nasty stuff and degrading too.

So in answer to your op, maybe some people do enjoy being treated badly, others don't. Me and I'm sure many more, it's part of roleplay or fun.

This response is so funny. I didn't have a bad childhood. There would be claims online and from some studies that people who are interested in this kind of stuff, would be due to abuse from childhood. I wasn't abused.

Fair enough, but if you like to stand in the corner with soiled underwear, under the instruction of (what I'd imagine are) complete creeps - that's your decision.

As I said, people can do what they want behind closed doors.

I just find that sort of behaviour irritating and weird.

Any idiot can **** into their underwear/get tied up/shat upon/anally probed, whatever.

Try doing something that takes intelligence, hard work, and dedication to get your kicks. To me that's rewarding. It doesn't take a slightest bit of intelligence or hard graft for adults to wear nappies or butt plugs.
If you get the same kind of thrill from ****ting into your pants then more power to you, but I think it's utterly creepy.

Did a teenager write this??? April 15, 2012
    By meymoon
    Format: Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase

I really don't like writing bad reviews. I admire people who have the courage to put pen to paper and expose themselves to the whole world, especially those writing erotica. Having just finished this book, however, I feel compelled to write a review.

About half way through the book, I looked up the author to see if she was a teenager. I really did because the characters are out of a 16 year old's fantasy. The main male character is a billionaire (not a millionaire but a billionaire) who speaks fluent French, is basically a concert level pianist, is a fully trained pilot, is athletic, drop dead gorgeous, tall, built perfectly with an enormous penis, and the best lover on the planet. In addition, he's not only self made but is using his money to combat world hunger. Oh yeah, and all of this at the ripe old age of 26! And on top of that, he's never working. Every second is spent having sex or texting and emailing the female character. His billions seem to have just come about by magic. It seriously feels like 2 teenage girls got together and decided to create their "dream man" and came up with Christian Grey.

Then come the sex scenes. The first one is tolerable but as she goes on, they become so unbelievable that it becomes more laughable than erotic. She orgasms at the drop of a hat. He says her name and she orgasms. He simply touches her and she orgasms. It seems that she's climaxing on every page.

Then there's the writing. If you take out the parts where the female character is blushing or chewing her lips, the book will be down to about 50 pages. Almost on every single page, there is a whole section devoted to her blushing, chewing her lips or wondering "Jeez" about something or another. Then there's the use of "shades of". He's "fifty shades of @#$%% up," "she turned 7 shades of crimson," "he's ten shades of x,y, and z." Seriously?

The writing is just not up to par, the characters are unbelievable, and the sex verges on the comical. I don't know what happens in the remaining books and I do not intend to read them to find out. But given the maturity level of the first book, I imagine that they get married, have 2 perfect children, cure world hunger, and live happily ever after while riding into the sunset, as the female character climaxes on her horse causing her to chew her bottom lip and blush fifty shades of crimson. Jeez!

It just means lots of women fantasise about sex with a "bad boy", not that it means they'd like a relationship with one. In the same way as some guys would be interested in ****ing a Barbie doll but not a relationship with her.

Haven't read the books though - and not interested in them.
