Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Apart from the obvious of becks and henry, who are the players currently playing in america who played at the highest level in Europe?

I was reading last week a premier league team signed a decent player from the MLS who was earning "only" $3k/week and his new teammates would probably overage over 10 times that salary.

There must be HUGE differences in salaries within each teams first XI as there is strict financial controls in the MLS.

Is it a case where a MLS team signes a big name player that his new teammates have to share less of the pie so to speak?

each club has a salary cap that they can't go over. however they're allowed two designated players. these are usually the big names that break the salary cap restrictions.

all player registrations are centrally held i believe, which is to say that the player contracts are to the MLS and not to the clubs, and it's the MLS who pay their wages

No because the wages of these marquee players falls outside the salary cap.

Only players off the top of my head are Rafael Marquez, former Barca centre back, and Juan Pablo Angel. Angel could be retired now though but he played for Ny red bulls recenty.

Its been a while since you watched it obviously. Angel went to the Galaxy in 2010 and is now with Chivas USA.

Other well known players in the MLS include Alessandro Nesta, Torsten Frings, Kris Boyd, Arne Friedrich and theres others I just can't think of right now.

Anyone following the league able to say he's getting on?

He is playing well and had a good game against Toronto which he scored a nice goal in.

He also almost set up a great goal with a superb flick and an inch perfect cross but the Philly striker couldn't finish it.

Still only 22 years old. If he stays grounded he can improve even more and get back in the US team.

who the hell are half them, clearly people only go to MLS when they are crocked and want retirement funds.

nothing wrong with that in itself, but its a crap league and has been for some time.

Soccer is a very young sport in the US and growing rapidly. The standard at the moment is low but it is improving, and since 2007 the league has been expanding and efforts have been made to improve.

There was a cracker of a game on live last night on ESPN between LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers. Finished 5-3 to Galaxy with Keane and Beckham getting two goals each. It was real end to end stuff. One of the most entertaining games I've seen in a while.

Crap in comparison to the Super Sky Sunday Sesh league? Yes.

However in its own right, MLS is a very good league and is getting better year on year. Can't ask for much more given it's still relatively new.

Rafael Marquez is the biggest legend for the amount of money he is earning over there. He is making more then Becks this year.

    Only in "wages".

You can be very very sure that the "wages" portion of Becks' income is only a fraction of what he's actually earning from playing there!

I loved the celebration between Keane and Beckham at 2.32 after Beckham's goal. It's great.

Other way around really, it's gotten progressively better.

    absolutely cracking atmosphere!!!!!!

Been to the Home Depot area for Galaxy matches 6 times this season, and unfortunately the atmosphere is nowhere near as good. It's a very family friendly atmosphere, but there's just not really any great buzz. Also it just irks me hearing football phrases in an American accent...it just sounds...wrong...

The quality in fairness though is a lot better than I'd expected. Galaxy play some very good attacking football on the ground at times. They seem to have stopped playing Edson Buddle too, which is good. Has all the physical attributes to be good, but just seems really stupid in his play. He tends to get in Robbie's way a lot too.

Half a million dollars seems like nothing for a professional footballer though. Would have thought he could have got a little better at a lower league Premier/Championship team?
