Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I suspect some of the men in after hours don't know any women in real life (aside from ones they are related to) and they are posting nasty sweeping generalisations about women on boards to pretend that they do actually know some women - it's like the way young men think they know all about sex from watching porn but in reality they are so, so wrong.

Do you see any problem with the above statement you made?? Just giving you a chance to correct it....

Not to hand no, just personal experience trying to get involved in debates on AH. No problems anywhere else on boards or other forums but you chip in here and in my experience your opinions are invalidated. So I've often not bothered posting.
Perfect example being the usual "period" references if something gets heated and a woman contributes. Personally I've always gotten the vibe that women aren't exactly welcome in AH. Not really helped by all the women-hating threads that are posted frequently.

I know of lots of women who post in AH. There are quite a few posting here infact. If they didn't venture into AH,they would not be aware of this thread.

If you do a poll and it turns out AH comprises of 95% men so it's ok to put women down for a laugh, then women will continue to avoid AH.
Not because they don't want to post but because they are not made welcome.

If it turned out 99% male it would never be acceptable to put down women for a laugh.

Lets not get carried away here, there are some problems but it's not exactly a no go area for all females.

Women are basically not really welcome in AH. If you try to wade in you get a pat on the head and an "awww bless" type response. If you get deep into a debate you get a "monthly" type dismissive response.

Ssshhh. There there. Have a lie down. All that thinking seems to have made you a bit cranky.

Report what exactly? A dismissive tone?

To be fair when you open a board and see a thread putting down women and not being locked or the OP being reprimanded, you kinda get the vibe that reporting some chap for being dismissive of you because you're female, is a waste of time?

The entire vibe of AH screams "anti female".

Like I said, it's not a female friendly place and personally, I'd like to see that change because it is AH's loss.
Lots of witty, intelligent women are put off posting here because of a small minority of idiots and a general acceptance of women bashing on this board.
I'd report if I didn't think it was deemed acceptable on here.

I didn't mean to imply that. I browse here a lot, but don't post as often as I would usually. I am somewhat put off posting here if I'm honest. And this thread seemed like a good opportunity to say that.I see other women have said either they are put off posting on here or have curbed their posting here for similar reasons.

I also frequent other sites and see many posts about AH and people (mainly women) being "afraid" to post here.

Just giving feedback from my own experiences and thoughts. Not saying it's the same for everyone.

Yeah agreed, to be honest I would prefer someone to come out with a totally outrageous anti-woman comment, at least the poster would be hauled in over it but there is a form of stealth sexism here, little comments, digs, meant in jest a lot of the time but which don't add to the threads in question and just make it hard to be involved in the conversation.

Apologies not all young men do. Some young men!

But still, I mean it in a serious way - people, women included, make funny jokes or smart comments about women that can be taken in the way they are meant, other times its overkill and nasty.

What I've learned from this thread: Many Irish women don't think many Irish men are funny.

These men get annoyed they're not getting any and blame it on women who are too "up" themselves.

presumably referring to "you're cranky cuz yur on the rag" style responses. Thats not a dismissive tone, thats a fairly clear remark, which would be obvious to anyone reading it.

Report what? When I asked you for examples, they suddenly morphed from direct gender related insults into a "dismissive tone". The funny thing is, the last time this came up, I asked a poster for examples as well - they hadn't any either.

The truth is their are some stupid threads started and stupid remarks made, but its in no way as bad as some on this particular thread would have us believe.

WHy is it such a big deal?
Why can't you ignore it if you don't like it?

People are so quick to be offended. I love AH, never once been slightly offended. I'm a woman and laugh at it. This thread is proving most of what the women here are giving out about like!!

I have to say I much prefer male company. Think men are generally funnier, and not as touchy.

so AH is not welcoming of women, it's not women-friendly is the complaint

well maybe so but guess what - it is not really welcoming of anybody and not generally human-friendly

it's a slightly misanthropic, ironic, sarcastic and occassionally darkly humourous view of the world - it can sometimes be offensive to....well just about everybody out there but the extreme stuff is moderated

do you want to dilute that or just dilute that for stuff that applies to women?

again there is a lot of vague complaining going on here but people aren't exactly expressing in specific direct terms what they want changes

i notice someone expressed they didn't like the "dismissive tone" in the forum earlier on - crikey i strongly suggest if you don't like a critical sneering view of the world you go elsewhere

    so in short

    1. express precisely in clear specific terms what you want changed

    2. AH can decide if it wants to be rebooted as a more serious mature and politically correct debating forum a la humanities

    or

    3. AH can maintain the edginess except when it comes to women's issues

    or

    4. people who don't like the "tone" of the forum can go to a forum more in keeping with their sensitivities

Just because you consider the constant insults hilarious, doesn't mean all of us do. Call us touchy all you like, but there are enough women here who clearly find it enough of an issue not to just dismiss it as being oversensitive.

Fair enough. But like I said, I frequent other forums on here and threads dissing a certain group of people are generally dealt with quick smart. But threads on AH dissing women are left to run for pages and pages.
Personally I assumed AH was a free for all, comprising mainly of men and women were fair game.

Which is why I don't usually post on AH and why I don't report. I browse but tend not to get involved unless I see something I truly feel passionate about.

As eviltwin said, it's more a vibe, a series of little put downs, a general consensus. Very hard to explain and very hard to report because it's not blatant all the time. And when it is it's meant to be "funny".
Plenty of references about women having their period, remarks about sluts, comments about ugly women, Irish women all being fat and/or ugly, Irish women being spoiled and horrible, single mother bashing.......I can go and find specific examples but I don't see the need. It's been done in the OP. I find all of that as bad as the religious and race and sexual preference bashing....which is all stamped out pretty fast. But the gender ones aren't.

You can fight back and argue but you know you're in the minority on here and will be ripped to shreds so tend not to bother.
Again, just my own experience on AH.

This is After Hours, yes it is and you're more than welcome to respond in kind. I say this as a woman, you should check in your sensitivities before you post here and just enjoy the banter. If someone said a lot of these things to me in a bar or at work I'd have a problem with that, but here is different. A lot of things are said to be edgy or provoke reaction, if you can't say thing inhibited on AH where can you say it?
I just generally don't like the idea of boundaries of acceptance being drawn up in a place like this, not liking something is fine but this brigade of people who want censorship against it unsettles me a bit about society in general.

I'm not saying we should have censorship, I'm saying these comments shouldn't be made in the first place. Isolated comments don't bother me, and often when people pick up on something minor somebody says people turn on them and call them "hysterical" or "overly-sensitive"etc. But what happens when it's loads of "harmless comments" coming from different sources? The all add up to reveal an underlying disrespect and animosity towards women.

I didn't insult you, did I? It's something you're rather proud of as I recall. like I said, just harmless banter :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 186 ✭✭omgitsthelazor

I suppose some things just shouldn't be said at all... ;)

Also, I tend to think that if you wouldn't say it to somebody's face you have no business posting it online either... But that's just me.

We live in a very inhibited society where negative comments can have consequences.
I wouldn't tell my parents what I did during those teenage sleepovers, I'd happily share that information anonymously on the internet. If my boss made a racial slur on Polish drivers at a corporate breakfast I'm definitely not going to point out how inappropriate his comment was, if someone on AH does it you can be sure as hell I will.
There are consequences of saying what you think to peoples faces, there aren't on the internet and people should appreciate that honesty in the medium and take it for what it is rather than try to interpret blunt comments in an inhibited context.

As is the rest, but if I was a 'typical woman' I might be offended. Maybe keep your bitchy comments (sorry, banter)to yourself if you arent able to take sweeping generalisations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

I think most of the women who post here are good sports who can take the banter to a certain extent and there is nothing wrong with a bit of banter, its fun and for the most part lighthearted and nothing wrong with that but its getting to the stage that the "anti women" slant is becoming a feature of AH which is a shame because it does put people of both sexes off.

Some of the comments are just lazy, its easier for some to say something patronising than make a decent contribution to the thread which just makes it feel like you're reading an argument on facebook between a group of 13 yr olds.

Its all part of the general dumbing down of AH over the past couple of years.

That's the thing I have a problem with. Why shouldn't there be consequences online? If someone starts calling me names or telling me that I am of a certain opinion just because I'm on my period, should I have to put up with it? Really?

I do think there should be consequences for what you say and do online. It's never okay to be abusive or plain mean, IRL or online.

There's a difference between banter and someone describing all Irish women as ugly, fat, gold-digging, workshy, obnoxious princesses on a daily basis though.

AH is full of banter and I don't think anyone has a problem with that, but lately some of the threads (and comments in them) have just turned into mysoginistic rants about all Irish women.

Someone saying "women are less capable of making rational decisions due to blah blah blah" is not something I like to hear but its impersonal and a topic worth discussing. It's not something you're going to say at the office party either because every woman listening will instantly lower her opinion of you if thats what you believe, but there aren't and shouldn't be consequences for sharing it online.

I'd agree with this comment, while understanding why Dark Crystal started this thread, and agreeing with a lot of the comments -: in particular, evil twin's comment about the insidious nature of sexism on AH - somehow nasty jibes at women (Irish women, particularly) manage to sneak in all over the place.

It doesn't particularly wreck my enjoyment of the board, it's a bit tiresome, but so are a lot of other aspects of this board.

What gets to me about it is when it appears very clear that it isn't banter/joking/whatever but a genuine expression of an unpleasant attitude towards women. Bundling us all into one big blob of homogeneous horribleness irritates me considerably. Bothers me to learn there are still a lot of men who think women are selfish spiteful creatures with few, if any, redeeming qualities. Makes me wonder do some men I know in real life harbour a distorted view of women that they don't articulate.

I've been happy to notice plenty of men post positively about women though, if there was never a male voice of reason cutting through the dysfunctional outlooks portrayed on this board, I'd definitely pack up my posting pencil case and go elsewhere.

I'm also very happy to notice there isn't a deluge of counter threads made by women to match the 'let's slate women' threads. Being secure in your own worth won't stop sly digs being posted about women, but it's a pretty strong shield.

It's been a good thread to read all the same. It's good to get stuff like this discussed every once in a while. Which is one of AH's strengths - I reckon - getting a hearty argument/debate/discussion going on topics that, apparently, people have plenty to say about.

I don't get the argument that one should ignore something said on the internet but take it to heart if spoken in real life.
    What's the difference?
A hurtful remark is a hurtful remark regardless of the medium.

I think most people, male or female, can recognise "banter" (I hate that word and think it should only ever be used in quotation marks) when they see it, most of the time.

The problem is that there's a minority of posts and threads which go beyond banter and are pretty spiteful. It is a minority, but they do harm the image of the forum, because lots of the posters who post such stuff do tend to repeat it again and again. Such posts are not intended as "banter" and could never be confused for such.
Some of these people are clearly lunatics and ought to be ignored, but I'd imagine they might be pretty hard to ignore when they're repeatedly posting nonsense.

There are also some cases where posts intended as "banter" don't come across as such due to the lack of tone when using solely text. The majority of male users means that there's thus going to be a fair few such innocent but ambiguous posts.
I think it would be best if posters took a second to see things from someone else's point of view, at least sometimes, and think about how their post might be perceived.

If the tone is in doubt then, as someone mentioned earlier, use a smiley.
    For example:

"dere wouldnt be uch a problem if wimminz stayed in the kitchen makin sammiches and didnt read boards on dere mans computer :pac:"

Once you've gone pac, you'll never go back.

Moo, I enjoy your posts but if you start posting like a Commerce student just to bludgeon the fact that your comments are tongue in cheek into the heads of a minority of the "thicker" offendable folk, then I may have to put you on ignore, and that would make AH a sadder place.

I don't think I personally need to use too many smileys. I like to think that I've enough mastery of the English language to convey my tone well enough without resorting to emoticons, apart from the occasional :pac: because he's great.
And if some people are too stupid, ignorant and, doubtless, ugly, to get when I'm being tongue in cheek, then that's their fault, and the fault of their stupid faces.

I'm thinking more of the people who try to be tongue in cheek but don't really master it. The smileys are like crutches or stabilizers for them which they'll gradually be weaned off as they get better with practice.

I just want to echo sentiments of other ladies here saying that AH is not always welcoming to women. I read AH daily but I am put off posting to a certain degree by the significant undercurrent of sexism and the recent (last year) deluge of outright anti-women (particularly Irish women) threads.
There's a difference between personal abuse and indirect comments. I don't agree. I think if you want to class one woman you know and have interacted with as fat, ugly, irrational etc then I'm ok with that - after all you are basing your opinion on her own personal traits. If however you want to class all women, or even all Irish women, as fat, ugly, irrational etc then I'm not ok with that - you are judging them all based on your interactions with one or a few.

It is not acceptable on AH to say that Nigerians are rude, loud-mouthed, dole scrounging scammers just because your neighbour is a rude, loud-mouthed, dole scrounging scammer from Nigeria. One is your personal experience of one person, the other is racism.

Why is it ok to say that Irish women are fat, ugly harpies based on your interactions with some Irish women?

I see where you're coming from, but that's just what people do. Opinions are built on experiences. If you don't agree with someone's opinion then just ignore them. If a woman said she didn't like Irish men, I'm not going to try and change her mind. I'd just let her be.

If a (presumably male) poster says that all Irish women are fat then either
    a) he is joking, or
    b) he is a complete idiot.
Either way, it's not really worth getting het up about.

I see where you're coming from, but that's just what people do. Opinions are built on experiences. If you don't agree with someone's opinion then just ignore them. If a woman said she didn't like Irish men, I'm not going to try and change her mind. I'd just let her be.

Well, that great for you - but I'm not so happy with this double standard of zero tolerance on prejudice against a group based on experiences of the few, except when the group are Irish women.

This is exactly what I've been trying to say all along, but couldn't get the words right! Thanks.

I really don't think the complaints people are making on this thread are being taken seriously enough. From what I can see, most people don't have a huge problem with the "banter" comments/jokes etc - they're the things that make AH what it is, and I get that. The main problem is with the actual threads and properly sexist posts that have been posted. Yes, I haven't reported them, but that's 'cause I don't read them as I know they will make me want to nuke the website :pac: But I'll make sure and report them from now on. We're not allowed to start threads saying that all Muslims are scum (or if a thread ends up going that way it gets locked); why can't it be the same for a thread saying that about women?

I'm not het up, thanks. I'm expressing my view.

    I agree with Miss Lockhart.

I think a woman's right to be treated with respect trumps a man's right to free speech!

That's the thing, it's never just "a" poster, it's a very vocal minority that come out of the woodwork and speak about women as if they were just a bit of sh!t on their shoe. When several AH posters say all Irish women are X,Y Z (or even say "some", but the thread descends into talking about "Irish Women" as some sort of monstrous, homogenous group) then it makes them look like absolute idiots, but when there are so many of them surely it's a view worth challenging through threads like this so they can see their viewpoint is not acceptable.

Yeah. Look, I can tell you what that'll turn into, it'll be used as an excuse for hypersensitivity, so that anything negative said about any woman for any reason is decried as sexism. How about you just deal with it instead of demanding that everyone else change for your benefit?

That's just it though. It's a minority. There's also a small minority of female posters who have made some bad and condescending remarks about men. Irish men have also been put into a certain group on a few occasions too. Neither gender is perfect!

Not nearly to the same extent as male posters though, not at all.
