I don't get the whole buzz about the 100Ms tbh. Why is it the biggest and most prestigious gold medal in the Olympics? It's not even overly exciting in my opinion. In the real world, if you ever needed to run 100M very quickly it wouldn't really matter if you were 2/100s of a second later in doing it. The 10,000M should be the more prestigious race, again just imo.

Imo, the best are the mid distances races. The 800,1500 and 3000m steeplechase are great to watch. Prefer the 800 atm as Rudisha is incredible. People rave about the likes of Bolt and Blake but Rudisha is the best athlete in the world imo

Yeah but in the 10,000M you don't see 4/5 fellas cross the line within half a second of each other!

They can be surprisingly tight at the end.

I must admit that is part of the reason I love the 100m

Watch the last 10 seconds of the 10,000 and you're okay!

But most people can't be bothered to wait 30 minutes for a result.

17 million in the UK alone watched Mo Farah cross the line last night.

love Colin Jackson's going mad versus Johnson's zero reaction during the race

They know full well the camera is on them , Jackson playing up to it!

    Nope, always been the 100m.

Is that gospel? It is actually the most prestigious athletic event? I would have thought it's a matter of personal opinion?

Huh? No way 25+ mins of lap after lap before anything remotely interesting happens. In the real world if you needed to run 10000m quickly you'd drive or get a bus instead.

You could however make an argument for the 400m, 1 complete lap as the showpiece event.

100m is all about the speed, whoever wins it is that fastest person in the world.

Personally I have always enjoyed the 1500m, the tactics that you can get in that race is brilliant.

100m is the most prestigious because it's the most elemental of all races. It answers, plain and simple, the question of who is the fastest athlete.

You can't make a mistake in the 100m whereas you could in the 10000m and still win it!

Yeah, no way you can make a poor ish start then come through to win in a new OR time.

Without wikipeda how many previous 10km winners can you name?

    What about 100m?

Unless you are a running geek you'll not have heard of most of the distance runners, the 100m Olympic champions are instant household names every time.

It's exaggeration for a rhetorical purpose.
So no, i don't believe i could ever beat Powell.

The 1500 M is the blue riband event of the olympics. The whole track and field event builds up to it. Thats why despite the fact that Coe only has two gold medals (only!), he is held up by some as an icon because he won consecutive 1500m finals. (80/84)

That was a nice interview with JJ Nevin. He comes across as a very shrewd young man with a good head on him. He said he had even more to give. He could go all the way.

Alright relax, I'm not claiming to be an athletics expert, I'm most certainly not but at the end of the day I suppose an Olympic Gold medal is an Olympic gold medal - are you a better athlete if you get it in the 100m rather than the 10000m - I mean they are completely different style races. I don't know, I don't think you can compare.

Anyway that's just my opinion. I'm not Looking for an argument :-)

Yeah, but around the late 70s and early 80s, the rivalry with Ovett first and then Cram was big news. They were breaking world records all the time - this was at a time when athletics was glamorous and pre-drugs..

Starts were never Bolt's strong point. Rarely doe he have the best start in a race.

Tbf, some of those 100m champions are known for more worse reasons than their sprinting. Also, I wouldn't really consider the likes of Donovan Bailey or Maurice Greene from recent times, or most before Carl Lewis as household names. I'd probably only consider Owens,Hayes and Hines pre Lewis as househould names.

I'd say Borzoz in 72 was fairly well known at the time - won the 100-200 double I think.

    But athletics is different.
No matter what distance the race is, the purpose is to cover that distance in as fast a time as possible.
So it's all about covering a distance at the greatest speed possible.
What sets the 100m apart is that the winner is, without question, running much faster their top speed than any other athlete is.
So it's the most elemental and clear; who is the fastest runner on earth?
I can understand why people may find other races more fascinating, but there's a reason the 100m is the most prestigious.

    Decimal counting system,

    100m < 10secs has a nice ring to it

Why not the indoor 50 or 60m so?

    That's a legitmate question.
I think the 100m has been picked as the perfect distance to sort out the question of 'who's the fastest' because it's probably been worked out that sprinters don't get into full stride and to their top-speed within 60 meters; they're usually hitting their top speed around the 80 metre mark and can either power on or go backwards from there.
There has to bit of latitude.
But you're right, i think, in wondering what distance would actually perfectly answer that question.
I'd say, though, that 100m is pretty much spot on.

For me it's the marathon, how those guys travel at that speed for that distance is as staggering as bolt running 9.64 tonight.
Watching the ladies marathon earlier they were nearly on the floor running up to the finish, and actually on the floor when they did. Personally not a fan of the street finish.
Finishing this great race away from the stadium takes away from the event, even though it's great to see the ordinary Joe on the streets cheering on the runners but there's something magical when the leader of the marathon enters the stadium to the cheers of the crowd.

But Wow, how Bolt blew them all away, with all the doubts answered in just 9.63 seconds - unforgettable.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Terrible start and still winning in 9.63. Fastest man the world has ever seen by some margin!
Not a white man to be seen

There is only one white man who has ever run 100m in sub 10s. Once.

There are more than 70 black men who have done that. One of the finalists today has done it himself more than 80 times

And some still say there are no genetic differences between the races :)

just one race yes. It starts at between 1.00 and 1.30 is what I heard.

if she finishes in top 3 she is sure of medal or even if she finishes ahead of any of other 3 sailors who are within point of each other as its double scores. If she wins the race she wins Gold.

    Would take bronze now.

The great 200/400 meter sprinter Michael Johnson recently did a documentary on the BBC where he delved into this very subject!
His conclusion was that most (but not all) of the top sprinters in the world come from Jamaica and the USA, and to cut a long story short, the main theory was that those top sprinters are the descendents of slaves brought to the Caribbean/USA from West Africa, the journey by boat would invaribly result in many deaths on the arduous voyage, which left only the strongest as survivors - then those strongest survivours were bread with the previous batch of slave survivors, who were then mated with the strongest, etc etc etc etc, which did in effect lead to the black slaves being bread to be be the strongest/fastest for their masters plantations . . .

Its a very black subject (excuse the pun), but this breeding programme done by the white colonial masters hundreds of years ago "may" have resulted in the modern day superiority of the black sprinter? (questionmark).

That's the gist of Michael Johnson's BBC documentary (aired only last week).

Lemaitre has done it 7 times. Plus he's run exactly 10 seconds, and as sprint times are rounded up, it's likely that it may have been 9.99x in reality. Marian Woronin of Poland and Koji Ito of Japan have both run 10 seconds dead, too.

Patrick Johnson of Australia ran 9.93. He's of Irish and Aboriginal descent.

The 5th-place finisher in the Vault is something of an unusual case, but good to see: Oksana Chusovitina has been competing at the highest level since 1990, has a team gold from the Barcelona 1992 Olympics and many European and World championship medals including a Silver in Tokyo last year, is a mother, and is still at it at the age of 37. (Who says you're over the horse at 18?)

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be

Oh I totally agree. But if she comes 4th who is going to remember her in 12 months?

Where as if she gets any medal she will be remembered as being medalist.

She can be extremely proud of her fantastic achievement even if she misses out tomorrow, but hopefully she get Medal and better still a Gold one.
