Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Exactly. Fair play to her. Still though, Wells is amazing to watch. Like something from X-Men.

If Chris Hoy put his latest gold medal on eBay, I would hazard a guess and say it would go for a bit more than £450.

He'll only get scrap value in a pawn shop though. :)

Ailish looks absolutely stunning, our athletes may not win a lot of medals but our pundits certainly are top of the class in the fashion and hairstyle stakes - super effort from them, i think the lottery should give them more funding

to be fair it's an easy mistake to make, she was treading water in the last 40 metres

Think some are deceived by Derval's silver at the Euros, years ago.

Have to remember the Europeans in athletics are pretty mediocre, when you don't have the likes of USA, Jamaica, etc in sprints, or Ethopians and Kenyans at middle distance. Only the field events are really strong at that meet.

Derval is running at her level which is very good, but just short of world-class.

Not much point having a good start if you dont have a good finish, which is everything in sprinting

I know, but that's three years ago, and she's basically at the twilight of her career, while someone like Pearson is right in her prime.

interesting fact of the day - the gorgeous 100 metre hurdler Lolo Jones is a virgin at 30

women of Ireland, learn from her

Oh I agree, but she seems to have always delivered when it mattered most.

She actually did better then I thought here too.

She has always been a woman who gets great start.

She still has achieved great things in her career, just take a look at somebody like Paul Hession who career has dipped ever since Beijing

That was the greatest rivalry track and field ever had Coe and Ovett I was always rooting for ovett as I thought Coe was like a conservative MP.

I think he has done a great job with these games, so I like him now.

Whatever happened to ovett, is he even a sir.

And 5000m, 4x400m relay, high jump and a few more events.

None very likely to bring us home a medal though.

Ah yes, Olive Loughnanne (?) - forgot about her, she has a chance at a medal iirc

to be fair you are right, derval has always performer to her potential at the major events

i think you are being slightly harsh on poor Paul H - he has had injuries like Derval in recent years, and like Derval he is getting on and again like Derval if he is just a few tenths off his best he'll have no chance of making finals

i think they've both been good but yes Derval has medals in her collection I guess so maybe you have a point, 200 metres is a really competitive event though

Olive, and a male one who has already finished 9th in his weaker event this week. Both are outside shots at a medal. Out canoe sprinter is good enough too, so im told.

Our walkers and canoe sprinter have decent shots afaik.

So from Irish point of view so far what have you made of our competitors?

We could still win 4 medals in Boxing which would be great.

Been disappointed with some and happy with others.

Not sure what to make of it so far if im honest.

If Annalise had got medal yesterday I think I be lot more happier. She did terrific though, great achievement, but difference between medal and not can put one thoughts in negative fashion.

Rob Heffernan going in the 50km walk too, which is a better event for him than the 20km that he did at the weekend. Brendan Boyce and Colin Griffin too.

Maybe I am to be fair. I suppose there is only one way you can go when you were "fastest white man in world".

I think Paul just took things little too serious at times. On his best form though he was very very good.

We do have few coming through that hopefully will make impact in Rio.

It would be nice to get 1 more medal from sport other then boxing.

    slightly disappointing overall

we are heavily dependent on our boxers which is becoming a pattern

but if the polish canoeist we have taken, and heffernan or loughnane as well our four remaining boxers all get a gold, well then 7 golds would be a satisfactory olympics and it's not out of the question

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,231 ✭✭✭Hercule Poirot

Olive Loughnane (looked it up :p) got silver at the 2009 World Championships at the 20 km walk - definite pedigree in this event

maybe we can add a bit of padding to our position on the medal table by adding medals achieve by athletes with Irish coaches or physios or who rode Irish horses - if the Olympics Committee object we can maybe reluctantly agree to put an asterisk beside our medal total but we really need to start moving up that table

The 10,000M should be the more prestigious race, again just imo.

Just looking at the 800 meter race which is almost a sprint and I think this should be the blue ribbon event.

The 800 and 1500 should be the main events imo. The 800 in particular is great to watch
