Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

From the IT Olympics blog this morning:

"BBC Northern Ireland last night made quite an audacious and factually incorrect claim - that Northern Ireland had won its fourth medal of the Olympic Games after Michael Conlan secured a medal in the ring last night.

First – The Chambers brothers from Coleraine both received a medal as part of the British men’s lightweight fours but in reality, it should count as one medal not two. That's how it is tallied in the medal chart. That means Northern Ireland (and technically it’s Great Britain and Northern Ireland) have won two medals. Alan Campbell won bronze in the men’s single sculls.

Secondly (and more importantly) – Michael Conlan is from Belfast but boxes for Ireland. He did not win a medal for Northen Ireland last night.
It seems that everyone wants to claim the Irish boxers."

Well the Chambers brothers only really count as half a gold medal in that case seeing as they were part of a four.

Tom Dunne was behaving like a giddy schoolgirl earlier on. With all this hype, I fear that the poor girl might suffer an angry public backlash if something goes wrong for her.

try listening to 5live someday. they've been hyping up every medal chance they've had since the 'made for cavendish' road race at the start. yesterday it was all about victoria pendleton going out on a high, today, mo farah is the headline again for the 5000m heats!
i'm sure a lot of radio stations in different countries are hyping up their own olympians the very same way.

Whats the deal with the showjumping? Is it just once around? Only been 2 clear rounds so far, and one of them is Cian O'Connor.

Well I suppose I meant running/sprinting we're not good at. I watched Coe's 1500m from Moscow last night, there were only white people in the race. Funny how it changed. The countries dominating now just weren't developed enough at the time to make it to the olympics and the world wasn't as globalised.

Many African nations boycotted Moscow.

I find it funny that when I suggested we could compete in the jumps and the throws, you changed tack to the running events.

All Irish people are not white, either.

There will be a final later on. Best twenty scores from the first round go through I think!

I am watching that and it is a good sport to watch:eek: a lot of tension in it. Cian O Connor is joint first.

But the horses, they are truly one of natures beautiful creatures, I never seen horses like that, I much prefer my car.

No there'll be an angry backlash against ourselves ie why do we get so excited about this stuff when we are so sh1te. Self-loathing begrudgery, a major weapon in the arsenal of any Irish person

We can only hope and pray, however Cian was seen talking to Nicky Henderson the other day.....

Fair play to Cian, it'd be our first non-boxing medal since Sonia 12 years ago if he managed it. Would well and truly put to rest the ghosts of Athens for him.

Chill out, Jesus. We're currently God awful at athletics, all of them, maybe we should try and specialise elsewhere as we're a small nation, that's all I'm saying.

I like this thread, its a legendary thread, what it is basically is a bunch of guys and gals in a pub watching some sport and voicing their opinions and sometimes their passions.

Although there was a mod warning on us guys expressing our sexual interest in some athletes and commentators, that is part of a pub natter, and you ladies are wellcome to express your interests, there are some beauts in the male arena, , Usain Bolt, that Brit bronze medal winner of the long jump, Ian Thorpe, Micheal Phelps and that is just to mention a few.

Well if us ladies are free to express our interests in some of the male beau's without a warning I would def have to say Ian Thorpe is up there at the top of list even if he was fully clothed and commentating - which he was great at.

I'm keeping an eye out at the track and field to see who joins Ian on the list.:D

Lol, Ian Thorpe, campest man since Kenneth Williams. You'd have a hard time getting him in the sack, "Darling those shoes, that skirt? What were you thinking?"

Any idea if the BBC are showing the Katie fight live? We're on an English server so I can't get RTE commentary, can either watch it without commentary or else on BBC iPlayer if it's on there!

Clicked on women's wrestling. Looks a tad strange to me. Wrestling in general. Their outfits aren't flamboyant enough.

    BMX cycling on later!

Between the '80 and '84 games and the various boycotts most countries took part but Coe, Ovett and Cram were the main contenders anyway.

Thats all it is really, a personal opinion. Personally I'd discount the value of team sports or any sport where a person didnt have to qualify to compete.

Phelps record is phenomenal, and wont ever be matched imo. Merlene Ottey competed in 7 Olympics, for a track athlete that is amazing. She also still runs competively at the age of 52 and was close to getting the time to qualify for these Olympics.

I agree with you there in a way.

Redgrave was part of a team that won Gold so it is much easier when work load is shared and there is only 1 way to row.

Wheras Phepls might have only done 3 Olympics it is still 12 years, he did in a number of different disciplines in swimming - which some achievement as to excel in a number of different strokes is still a rarity. I know he also did relay and had team Gold but he got more swimming as an individual.

Personally I think he is the greatest Olympian of all time.Thoughyou splitting hair really when trying to decide as track and fields will say there are better and vice versa.

Bit of a disaster I'm afraid. Its a shame, the chap showed a lot of potential in his early career.

It's looking like another very disappointing track and field campaign for Ireland.

am i right in saying that the only track finals we have qualified for or the ones that didn't require qualification at the olympics?

Nah, all of our athletes had to qualify. There are minimum times needed and they all got them. From what I understand though, a lot acheived the times last year.

This is why I dont watch on RTE. Theres a fight on now (Ind vs GB) on BBC but on RTE they are having a chat. Yes an Irish fighter is up soon but this isnt a pro box night with gaps and then the main event. They just assume no one wants to watch the Olympics and just wants to see the Taylor fight and hasnt any interest outside of that. Its not even like they are choosing between showing Katie Taylor and showing other fights. That ould be ok.
