Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone know how the badminton player is doing?

Match has been delayed to about 20:50. BillO just said on RTE2 that they'd go to the match after the swimming. Best of luck to Chloe Magee!:)

Haven't a clue how it works to be honest, im guessing its up to the countries Olympic board to decide whether to enter a team to qualify or not and if its worth the costs of entering, but I could be wrong.

Was there any qualifying games or is it based on some other criteria like previous results?

Isn't it semi finalists of previous European under 21 championships?

How come Ireland don't have a football team in the Olympics?

I think it's something to do with how well they placed in the U23/U21 European Championships or something like that.

To qualify you need to finish in the top 4 in the Under 21 European Championship, which itself is extremely hard to qualify for. In this case, only the top 3 qualified as GB took up the 4th European place.

    One word. No

Switch on BBC1 for an absolute p1ss take by the GB women's hockey side. Hammered Japan

Chloe Magee on now in the badminton

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,231 ✭✭✭Hercule Poirot

Magee on RTE now - ranked 90-odd places above her opponent so we should be looking at a win here

Nah I think Brazil will get it, and if Spain win their next 2 games and qualify, then they will be a good shout also.

    *I can't believe I cheered the French 4x100 relay win* :p

You'd seriously have to wonder how some of these competitions are actually recognised sports.

No chance. Brazil will destroy them. I still expect them not to qualify from the group.

Spain are 1 down with 2 to go v Honduras

Sneaking a bronze would be massively exceeding expectations in the mens football, might have a better chance with the women

Spain are about to lose 1-0 to Honduras, so that's them gone.

Just heard on RTE that chloe magees opponent from Egypt is obeying Ramadan and fasting for the day. Bound to make it extremely tough to be 100% for something as energy sapping as badminton

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,414 ✭✭✭Lord Trollington

I'd give McGee a serious seeing to.

How the hell did water polo ever make it into the Olympics? It looks like a game you'd play pissed while on holiday in Majorca

ha! It does look like that. I do however remember seeing an article somewhere (by men's health or something like that) that ranked water polo as the toughest sport.

Even do a quick google of "toughest sports in the world" and you will see water polo in a lot of the top tens.

From what I know they are not allowed stand on the pool floor and are constantly treading the water.

Yeah it would be a terrible shame if another country could win a tournament for once....!

There are 2 other games going on in that arena. I think a GB player is playing in one of the other games

Used to be an event in the Commomwealth games. Its about the only time I've seen it played.

Just looking up on the rules for badminton and discovered that the shuttlecock can reach speeds in excess of 400km/h

Spain are out of the footie (and throwing their toys out of the pram), Britain win 3-1 so should be through I think.
