For football fans; I wrote this in 2005:


Georgie The Belfast Boy


With a ball at his feet, he wasn’t just neat
He was Merlin in disguise
When put to the test, he was always the Best
And not just in Irish eyes
When Eusebio played, they said he was great
With Manu he would toy
But Eusebio and Benfica met their fate
When they met the Belfast boy
He showed them how to play the game
Many a face was wreathed in smiles
As they watched wee Georgie lay his claim
To be Best from the British Isles
Georgie wasn’t a saintly man
He was too fond of the drink
When he started goin’ down the pan
Some said, “Let him sink”.
There are those who think the worst of him still
And smirk as they watch him fall
But football fans will remember the skill
Of the greatest of them all
