I would look up the hia website to see what each company offers.
Some policies only cover public hospital, you also have private hospitals ie st vincents private and the high tech hospitals ie mater private, blackrock clinic.
I would look for a policy that gives you some cover in the private hospitals with an excess of €50/€125 per visit if possible as an excess per night could leave you with a high bill if you had to stay in hospital for a long period of time.
You also need to be aware that health insurance will cover you from day one if you have an accident but you will have to wait a min of six months to claim on a hospital stay and if you want maternity cover you have to wait at least a year before you can make a claim. If you know you need an operation and take out health insurance to have this in 6 months time the health insurance company may not pay this claim as you have a min waiting period for a per existing condition of at least 5 years or longer depending on you age when taking out health insurance. If you take out health insurance and you need to have a scan or hospital visit ask the consultant for the procedure number with which every company you are with. Ring the company to see if this is covered and where it is covered giving your consultant name.
