I still think Dempsey might come in but looks like we might have to sell Carroll/Agger before anyone comes in.

Any illusions I had of Gerrard playing a major role this season went out the window. Sahin is a must or another attacking midfielder.

With Chelsea apparently offering €15m more for Modric then Real, and Song confirmed off to Barca, I'd imagine the the chances of Sahin are slimming

By the way, was it Long who dived for Reading to win the pen in extra time in the League Cup at Anfield during Rafa's last season? At least I think it was Rafa's last season

Yes i saw the match and i agree with what you are saying it was like the players thought all we have to do is turn up and win.To be fair to lucas he is coming back from that injury. The thing that annoyed me the most was that we showed no passion after the Baggies scored

Wasn't as bad as Borini's dive today

Well at least that's one game out of the way, only 37 to go!

It is going to take time to change style of play for the team. Very disappointing result but we can turn it around. No Coates or Sterling on the bench was a strange one. Joe Cole and Carragher are far from the players they used to be. We were just bullied by West Brom today.
Andy Carroll should have started the game in my opinion or at least Borini through the middle. Credit to Steve Clarke though. I always liked the guy.

More just my thinking, people were saying we enquired about him but never followed it up with an offer. Seems like we need to offload a player before anyone else comes in.

No rumours these "club legends" are simple past it to varying degrees. That anyone should need to explain why Carra can't cut it (certainly cannot be relied upon to be good enough in the PL for 90 mins) is nearly beyond the joke - he is slow, he is unable to read players who are much quicker in thought or action (esp action) than he is.

Gerrard never really got into this game and became more of a hazard as it unfolded, sloppy passing one saw the ball passed to a Brom player who set them on the attack, ending in a peno and a red card.

Dropping Gerrard is of course full of risk for any manager, esp a new one. If he does so and sees his replacement do well and a winning result he will have been judged "lucky to have got away" with dropping him .Of course if Shelvey or whoever has a 'mare then any amount of poo will be flung at him and he won't dare do it again. Which is the problem with "totemic" figures at any club, how does manager deal with them when they are aging/slowing/playing poorly but not injured while also trying to keep your job?

I think we have a good squad of players who aren't been played where they should be,
    Enrique,,,,,,,, why?
    Why now
    Dropped,

I know he has been poor on occasion,
But don't mess with back 4 on first day of the season,

Line up will be 4-4-2 come ten games i think,,,,,,,,,,,Abandon system will be call from everyone,

We had no midfield today, It was never really at the races once West Brom took lead,

Sure thing, pal. But rather than wasting your time on me, maybe you could respond to the likes of Mike65 who was good enough to give a detailed reply to your post. I'm sure you are more interested in chatting in that manner than chatting to the likes of me as I don't want to play today, heck I would not want to play even if a master baiter of days gone by were to show face.:)

Some players definitely need more game time...we just fell apart when we were two down. I was disappointed that Suarez couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. So many chances. He really has to work on that. And Gerrard on his passes...what is up with that? Giving the ball away easily.

In all fairness Clarke knows a lot of our players out there today. He knew exactly what to do with us. I was just surprised that we played right into their hand. Rodgers is thinking about his style of play but I much prefer a manager who focuses on beating the team in front of him.

If he wanted to bring an attacker on, he should have brought on Sterling to run around those defenders, Coates instead of Carra, Gerrard should have been taken off after giving the ball away so many times.

Kelly and Johnson were okay today I thought. After Reina and Lucas I think they were good. Johnson is good at getting forward and Kelly should be in the center instead of bring on Cara.

Well it is all grand to see it now...roll on the next game.

Rodgers on cole "It's strange because he's trained very, very well all pre-season. Then he started the Gomel game in the Europa League and had to come off with a similar thing. "He got back, trained well and then went into the game today and the same thing has happened. It's something the medical staff will have to look at."

Once window shuts he'll be fine, He's going no where fast!!

I think people will cut Lucas a bit of slack after coming back from such injury, maybe Agger hasn't been jumped on greatly as it was atypical of him whereas others had an all too standard day at the office (Cole, Downing, et al).

Now I didn't see the game but why are people slating Cole? How long was he on the pitch for? It was hardly his fault he got an injury.

Time for the now, We are about to find out what Rodgers is truly made of,
    Can he show his worth,
    Cole on,,, ouch,,,

Hope he can progress as a manager,,,,,,,

Oh joy 90 grand a week for a player that will spend more time on the treatment table than the pitch
Would have liked to have seen Sterling on the bench instead

Have the same fear actually. We may end up stuck with a waste of a squad space for yet another season. If we cannot get rid of him, then would just put the next best ressie player that is already not listed onto the squad list and just dump Cole from the squad altogether. He can go train with the ressie or something. We might be stuck with his wages, but we should not have to be stuck with him wasting a squad place.

Would trust fairly untested players like Suso, Sterling, or Pacheco with a bench spot before the likes of Cole tbh. Nowt more than the busted docket that Lloyd called him.

I slate him because he is a waste of space in general playing terms. He offers nothing on the pitch, and is taking up a squad place (in in the case of today a bench space) that might have been filled by a more effective player.

I so wanted us to be the team other teams dread playing,
    Like under Rafa

Who wanted to draw liverpool in next round, No one
    Now everyone does,

We have no steel, no backbone

I think step forward is to be hard to beat, Then to play football
We are going to play football first, Not sure if this will work, Or if it will just get another Liverpool manager the sack,

Youd think if carra was as loyal to liverpool as some people think he is hed walk away now. Id love to see him explain his performance today .
Hes made his money ,what kind of ego/need for 100 000 a week must he have .
I kinda feel sorry for him .
If he wanted to be a club hero hed walk away and say to the fans he cant cut it anymore and taking this money from the club he loves is robbery .
Could probably get cash and a city defender for agger if his wage bill was used on one of them .

I don't think anyone is scapegoating him for the result today.

    It definitely wasn't his fault.

However, today we saw him in a Liverpool jersey.

That's enough reason to be disgusted & voice that disgust.

He came on. Ran for a ball. Then did his limping thing where he looks injured.

Pretty much the same routine he did in the recent Europa league game. It's hard to know with the guy if he is actually injured or just not up for it because he was similar in the second half of the season in France last season.

But if his fitness levels are really as bad as his time in France suggests, then the guy would be better served out of the game or just dropping to the odd Sunday league game because it is worrying that a professional footballer can have so little stamina for the least couple of seasons.

I blame Rodgers more for wasting a bench slot, but Cole once on the pitch was worthless.

No, the way I see it he knows we want to get rid of him and he won't get 100k anywhere else. I don't like saying a player let on he was injured but thats what it looked like to me.

Joe Allen passes in today's game: 10 to Borini; Johnson, Suarez 9; Lucas 8; Downing 7; Gerrard 6; Agger, Kelly 5; Skrtel 4; Reina, Carra 2; Cole 1

Cole is emblematic of the worst of the club, that's why he gets so much stick. That he pinged his hamstring after five minutes when he shouldn't have been anywhere near this game merely seems to confirm that he is bad news. For me him being paid not to play while injured or on loan seems more acceptable than being paid to play.
