I've got turnips (not swedes) growing in my allotment. I've read on: http://www.allotment.org.uk/grow-your-own/vegetables/turnips that they should be harvested when they are about the size of a golf ball!!!!

    Is that right?

Can you get these in Ireland?

White turnips you can get part of the year in Ireland, they are usually between golfball to tennis ball size. Shelf life of them isn't great so best to harvest as you need, great for soups and stews, really soft and light flavour. I would IMHO just harvest at golf ballsize if you need to thin out your turnip rows more.
