Logitech have a wireless desktop MK320 at £26.99

    http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/special-offers/closeout

There's always discount codes knocking about, online or here on threads in boards.ie

Logitech wireless keyboards and mice turn up at reduced prices regularly in Tesco, so it might be worth checking out in a b&m store

Logitech is a reputable brand, available above at reputable sources. As you say yourself, you probably can get cheaper equipment from the likes of dealextreme or chinese sellers on ebay.

If your looking for something that will just do the job but still not too bad then argos have a wireless keyboard and mouse for only €13.
the keyboard is a bit on the big side with a number pad on it but its really not bad and the mouse is perfect and even nice to hold...
or if you want there's this http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/ADVENT-AKBENT11-Wireless-Keyboard-Black/306415/173 advent keyboard in PC world for €20(in store) in the jervis centre in dublin thats really small and thin and very nice but you'll have to buy a seperate mouse :P I currently use it with an archos 101 tab and it works perfectly, planning on getting the argos bundle tho myself when i get a raspi :)

Never though of argos! I ended up getting one on amazon last night in the hope that it would get here around the same time as the pi... I got the following in the end:
1 "Kingston SDHC 16GB Class 4 Flash Memory Card"
    Personal Computers; £6.80
    In stock
    Sold by: Amazon.co.uk
1 "Genuine Sony Ericsson EP-800 3 Pin Mains Charger & EC-700 Micro USB Data Cable Suitable For Xperia 10, X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro, Vivaz, Vivaz Pro & Xper"
    Wireless Phone Accessory; £2.49
    In stock
    Sold by: iTALKonline-UK
    1 "Logitech MK260 Wireless Desktop"
    Accessory; £17.98
    In stock
    Sold by: Amazon.co.uk

IN case it's any use to anyone getting a pi! as far as I could tell that charger was a standard micro usb! although now I can't reember if the pi is a mirco or a mini! i can change the cable on it anyway!

Do wireless mouse and keyboards set work off one receiver? or will it take up two USB ports? I need to get another sensor for my logitech harmony remote as far as I can tell. think i'll need to buy a cheap pc remote as can't see any sensors on their own!

Im not sure if it will take up two ports but if so you could do what im gonna do and get a usb hub for the pi so you can connect more recievers to it if needed and if not its still handy to have more ports :)

waiting for delivery myself, should be shipped in next few weeks, have you invested in a case? what are your main plans for it? im planning to use it as a media centre, to begin with anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

yeah media centre as I got one of the Zyxel NSA things a couple of months back from boards bargain alert... and have a 2tb drive in that.. So media centre is my main one... downloaded Raspbmc and have it ready to stick onto an sd card.

Handy to be able to watch rte player on it as well I suppose... but i'd say 90% media player use I envisage! Maybe using internet on the tv the odd time don't really know! quite excited about getting it if truth be told!

How will people be connecting the Pi to their home network? Wired or wireless? Any recommendations for a good wireless adaptor?

I'll have mine wired as I already have an ethernet cable there (currently have a iomega screen play pro media player there but it won't play mkv's.. hence the excuse to get a pi!)

Get a wireless adapter off http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals list would be my advice!

Apologies in advance if this is a really stoopid question but here goes:

Is there only 1 type or Rasberry Pi?

I want to get one for someone's birthday in August, where should/can I order it from please?

    Thanks!

Yes there is only one type they are selling now (I think it's the B type).

    Here's where you should start

    http://www.raspberrypi.org/

RS Components and Farnell are the two places selling the Pi. You can get to their sites through the link I've given above

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

yeah farnell are saying 5 weeks delivery.... https://export.farnell.com/jsp/raspi/purchase.jsp?country=IE&verify=c054aae3c565572398ea31a5f04e5910

    So you better order soon!

Thanks v much, really appreciate the fast response :)

oh, one other question - what accessories (if any) would be good to get also? Present is for someone who is a programmer, so I know they want one of these!

If it was me I'd love one of these

Have a look at this site for all the different peripherals for the PI

    Thanks Clanket.

That remote keyboard looks pretty cool alright - but costs around 50 pounds. Is it really THAT cool do you think??

I'm not great on techie stuff, but for once I want to surprise this person rather than always asking them if X or Y is 'ok' before buying it for them. No surprise there then!

could be an option, £19.99 on supersaver... not as cool as that remote possibly but could be an option? I went for full size ones myself in the end as I have a remote that I will be using for media use.....

There's a lot of peripherals in the link I gave you. Have a look through them and spend according to your budget.

Here's a link to what you will actually need to get the Pi up and running.
