Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Think of a new tax!

Interesting idea though. I still think that this will stop people saving.

lets say that i have a savings account that i dont take money out of. I have 5k in there. I will be taxed on that. No problems there.
Next year i still have 5k (plus interest - tax). Will i be taxed again on the same money and at a higher rate becouse the money was in there longer?

that is it. I am hiding my money under my bed wink.gif

Basically there will be a 2% tax on your 5k.
If you only had that account for 6 months out of the year you pay 1% tax on 5k.
In a 2 year period there would be 2% one year and 2% the following year.
What this means is that if you are saving money (or doing nothing with money) it must be being put to good use for it to be worth paying a tax on. People will look for good investment opportunities because the safe option is taxable.

How about no more tax, we pay enough as it is.

wow. €100 tax on my savings per year. That is much higher than any interest that my savings would earn. I would loose money trying to save in a bank

But you cant just tax people for being safe. I would rather put my money in a save place and know that it there (even if it is barly earning interest) than risk loosing money hoping that i get lucky with an 'investment'.

Saving money is not the same as an investment. With an investment you stand to loose money.

Sorry, the 2% was just a nice round figure. It would have to be less than the interest being earned.

An automatic checkout tax. All those automatic checkouts have replaced taxpaying employees.

    Also,

    A "High Horse" tax

They would make a killing just in AH alone ;)

That's already ridiculous in ROI! Cyclists to pay a fiver a year for a permit and fins for no helmet or cycling on footpaths or obstructing traffic purposefully..

I think the master was being pedantic, it's called motor tax now.

Not really. They are just used more productively and spend longer with those customers who appreciate the human touch.

In all seriousness, I reckon the government could make a hefty sum if they put a one cent tax on every text sent in the country. I doubt most people would be out on the streets protesting about it.

An extra tax on cigarettes...say bring them up to €15 Euro or so. We can always pretend that it's for health reasons when in reality it's just to make more money from the 28% of the population that smoke and have done for the last 40 years or so..
If we catch anyone selling illegal cigarettes on the street then we can fine them €100 or so and that'll be even more money for us!!

If it was a €100 fine i would start selling myself! 40% of all cigarettes smoked in NI are smuggled. In ROI its not much less.

Which goes to prove the point that taxing cigarettes won't stop people smoking, it just drives people to buy smuggled ones, thereby making the criminals richer.

    Is 'whack' good or bad?

An incentive for people to keep healty seem to be a good idea. If you dont want to be healty you are bound to be the one that will end up costing the tax payer the most money in medication and HSE expenses and so is in not resonable that they should pay more

I think your idea's more than a touch Orwellian - monitoring an entire population's health for the purpose of levying tax. Government needs to be creative when promoting healthy living, but that's an endeavour best managed by loading certain foodstuffs with additional indirect taxation.

But it's complex - I'd imagine many lower income families don't necessarily choose to eat crappy food, they just can't afford not to. Penalising them financially for doing so (directly or indirectly) would possibly compound the problem.

Oh My God- I thought cigarette taxes were for our benefit- for health awareness.:confused::rolleyes:

    To Stop People Smoking?

NO?- NOT Exactly?- why cigarette prices have gone up? People have stopped smoking for health reasons, So they (the government) copped it so...... UH OH WE NEED TO MAKE SOMETHING OFF OF THIS- NOW WE ARE LOSING OUT. :o

If ony I' d known.

How about a tax on receipts? Would raise a few quid and be good for the enviroment

    A few quick ideas:
    - Processed food tax (raw food remains at a lower rate)
    - supplementary food/beverage tax between 11pm and 6am - would earn money from people who would not notice at the time (nasty, I know)
    - parliamentary question tax on all questions ruled out of order for obvious reasons (supposedly these cost a lot of money €200 to process)
    - Alcohol related injuries hospital charge
    - Wasting emergency services time charge
    - Drunk and disorderly charge (could be a good earner in this country - currently the law but not enforced)
    - Troll tax on boards threads :D
    - Tax on people who ring radio stations in the afternoon (Joe Duffy tax)
    - Tax on the Quinn family to pay for the insurance surcharge everyone has to pay for their mess
    - Jaywalking tax (I would be broke... it is currently the unenforced law)
    - Charity registration tax (prevent 12 different charities, all who chug collecting for the same thing - exempt all those that collect over a certain amount, that way most *real* charities would be exempt)
    - Religious donations tax (yes, I am going to be slammed for this, they should pay their way like everyone else)

What if you want a receipt to prove you paid the tax? That would start an infinite loop.
