Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So, what do you say? "Did ya see that brill film last night" or is it "did ya see that brill movie last night?"

Curious, as without being biased *cough*, the term movie tends to be an Americanism :)

Film. I've also recently trained myself to say "film" rather than "filum", which I'm quite proud of, tbh!

I call it a cinematic experience, like a real man should.

If you call in film or movie then you are a poof.

Watch the first 30 seconds ...

    I couldnt agree more :pac:
On one hand you can have some well put together 'film' with a solid plot (Film) and on the other hand some over the top cgi action movie that makes no sense (movie)

"we're trying to make a movie here, not a film" :pac:

Its an English / American difference I think

I still say movie though, even though I'm notta yank

But movie comes from 'moving pictures' (I think) so film would be more accurate would it not?

Not to me it isn't. Me Da took my Ma to the pictures. I would never say picture or film.

I'm going to watch a movie, sounds right to me.

Should I have? Is a public poll important on such an issue? :)

I say movie, film is something a movie or old photograph is printed on.

The word "film" in reference to films came from the fact that they were originally shot on photographic film stock & although the first moving or motion pictures were made by an Englishman, the Americans were the only ones for years who called them "motion pictures" and then later, "movies".

With the influence of American TV, many people now call them "movies", but either term is correct, though historically, "film" is the original name.

I know all this because I readadid it.

Isn't pictures used like cinema? ie. "I'm going to the pictures/ cinema", rather than like film. ie. "I'm watching a film" not "I'm watching a pictures"

Yeah, but what I mean is 'pictures' is used instead of 'cinema', not instead of 'film' or 'movie'

But that extra syllable is a feature of Hiberno-English. :( How could you? You avoided an Americanism and then went all out fancy pancy with your "proper" English. :p For shame!

They were filumin a filum up my way last week. :o

I end up saying both but I suppose I say "film" more.

    Never really mattered to me.

    phlegm

    You go to the phlegm?

It's Pictures - all other references are Americana shíte influences.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 130 ✭✭Fupping Grasshole

If I saw a film last night I'd call it a film but pronounce it as phlegm and if I went to the cinema I'd say I'm going to the cinema, was at the cinema etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 684 ✭✭✭CL7

Sometimes I say movie, other times I say film.

Edit: Oh and I couldn't give a toss about whether a word or a phrase is an Americanism or not. WTF anyone cares about this stuff is beyond me.
