They're not great either, I dont like when books like that focus on the same few narrow characters instead of the effects on the wider world, you can understand why film does it for budgets etc but it always feels like a wasted opportunity when an author does it, I found myself reading them just to find out what happens but I didnt really enjoy them. Looking forward to this though, lots of hopefully good sci-fi tv on the way now.

Oscar-winner Melissa Leo has signed onto M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming TV series Wayward Pines. The event series received the greenlight from Fox earlier this month, with an autumn 2014 debut scheduled.
Based on the novel Pines by Blake Crouch, the pilot has been adapted by The Playboy Club‘s Chad Hodge. Dillon stars as Secret Service agent Ethan Burke. When he arrives in the small Idaho town, he is tasked with finding out what happened to two missing federal agents. As expected, all is not as it seems as he winds up with a fistful of questions and no answers in sight.
Leo will play Pam, an “intense, unpredictable” nurse who tends to Burke after he ends up in Wayward Pines hospital. Starting off their relationship nice as (cherry) pie, Pam soon reveals her true colours and the two become enemies.
The show’s creators have acknowledged that Pines owes…well, its central premise to David Lynch and Mark Frost’s seminal cult classic, Twin Peaks. That show focused on Kyle McLachlan’s Agent Cooper. Sent to the small Washington town of Twin Peaks to solve the murder of Laura Palmer he too finds himself grappling with more questions than answers. Twisting, turning and offering up the finest slab of Lynchian you’re gonna get, the show captivated audiences in the 1990s.
Following on from Fox’s previous success with limited event series (a fixed number of episodes for a story arc) The Following, they’ve also added the 24: Live Another Day reboot to their TV slate. You’ve got to wonder why Shyamalan was approached for such a project. The director once synonymous with boundary bustin’ inventive thrillers has lost his clout in recent years. The Last Airbender suffered huge financial losses along with a severe critical beating. His latest feature, After Earth arrives soon in cinemas so we’ll see if he’s sharpened up.
Wayward Pines will premiere on Fox in 2014.

Carla Gugino joins as Kate Hewson, Ethan’s former partner and ex-girlfriend

    http://www.deadline.com/2013/07/timur-bekmambetov-to-reimagine-wizard-of-oz-as-fantasy-action-miniseries-for-syfy/

Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov is venturing into television with Warriors Of Oz, a mini-series project which has landed at Syfy. Bekmambetov will create Warriors Of Oz based on his idea. It is a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story in which a warrior from present day Earth is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land. Bekmambetov is set to executive produce and possibly direct. Search is under way for a writer to pen the mini, which will be produced by Universal Cable Prods. Syfy has been ramping up mini-series development, announcing two four-hour projects at its upfront presentation in April based on Larry Niven’s Ringworld and on Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End with producer Michael De Luca.

AMC has picked up 2 new series for full season orders, Halt and Catch Fire and Turn, both are period shows,

Halt and Catch Fire will be set in the early 80s and centering around the technology boom in silicon valley, i remember hearing that mike judge is developing a similar theme show for HBO but it supposed to be a comedy set in the same period, should be interesting have two shows based on the same thing,

also Turn set in summer of 1978 (seems rather shortsighted but whatever) about a group of farmers who band together to form the culper ring, a group of spies aiding the american revolution

Simply Dreadful news was dispersed by Showtime entertainment president David Nevins when he appeared Tuesday at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in Beverly Hills.
Revealing the first castings for Penny Dreadful — a “totally fascinating” eight-episode “literary horror” series being penned by film vet John Logan and helmed in part by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) — he said that Josh Hartnett (The Faculty) will play an American “fake cowboy” who enchants the ladies of Victorian era London, while Eva Green (Camelot) has been cast as Vanessa, a character Nevins described as “the fulcrum” of the super-secretive series before catching himself and withholding further details.
Penny Dreadful, which will also feature Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the Dracula novel, starts production in October to debut as soon as spring 2014. Nevins lauded the project as “smart and psychological, but we’re not going to be gentle with the horror. I think it’s going to scare the s–t out of people.”

CBS has given a straight-to-series order for Extant, a new serialized drama from Steven Spielberg that’ll bow next summer.
The network describes the project as a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.
    CBS ordered 13 episodes.
“Extant is a very original concept with layers of humanity, mystery and surprise that reveal itself throughout the script,” said CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler in a statement. “Our partnership with Amblin for Under the Dome showed that viewers respond to high-quality event programming in the summer. We look forward to building on that with Extant and offering CBS audiences another high-concept, unique event for summer television.” - Source EW
