    Gunsights

‘Justified’ EP Chris Provenzano Inks AMC Overall Deal, To Adapt Elmore Leonard’s ‘Gunsights’
Justified executive producer Chris Provenzano has signed an overall deal with AMC. Under the pact, he already is working on a drama series project, an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s 1979 novel Gunsights. This makes it a nice continuation for Provenzano, who spent the last five years on FX drama Justified, based on Leonard’s novella Fire In The Hole.

Considered Leonard’s final Western novel, Gunsights, set in 1893, centers on two tough men and friends, scout Dana Moon and Army man Brendan Early, who used to work together, including a mission chasing an Apache chief into Mexico. Now, the two former partners are on the opposite sides of a conflict between a mining company and a scattering of settlers on an Arizona mountainside: Apaches, Mexicans, and former 10th Cavalry regulars. Brendan is employed by the mining company attempting to drive the settlers out of their homes, while Dana is an Indian agent, defending them.

This marks Provenzano‘s return to AMC where he was among the original writers on the first season of the network’s first original drama series, Mad Men. One of the episodes he wrote, “The Hobo Code”, earned him a WGA Award nomination. WME-repped Provenzano joined Justified in Season 1, rising through the ranks to executive producer. On the feature side, he wrote the 2009 film Get Low.

Laverne Cox has been cast in the CBS drama pilot Doubt.
The Orange Is the New Black star became the first openly transgender actor to earn an Emmy nomination for her role in the Netflix series. Now her role in Doubt will also make her the first transgender series regular on a broadcast show played by a transgender actress (if CBS picks up the pilot to series).

From Grey's Anatomy executive producers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, Doubt is about a yet-to-be-cast defense lawyer who gets romantically involved with one of her clients who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime. Cox will co-star as Cameron Wirth, a competitive but compassionate Ivy League-educated attorney whose own experiences of injustice make her fight that much harder for her clients.

Rescue Me alum Steven Pasquale to co-star in the potential series, replacing Teddy Sears (Masters of Sex, now on The Flash).

From Grey’s Anatomy EPs Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, Doubt centers on Sadie Ellis (played by Katherine Heigl), a lawyer who becomes romantically involved with a client (Pasquale) who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime.
The project did not get a series order during the May Upfronts, but remained in contention at CBS after a script rewrite and casting changes. (Heigl’s role was originally filled by Private Practice‘s KaDee Strickland.)
