A friend of mine recently purchased a very old photo album at a car boot sale in Carragh Co. Kildare. When she got it home she noticed there was some very old photos left in the album. She would really like to give back these photos to the rightful owner as she feels that it may have been sold in error.

The inscription on inside cover says From Patrick to Lizzie Xmas 1899

There are various old photos inside one is of a couple getting married & on the back says Ethna & Johns wedding day 17th Dec 1946. With compliments John & Ethna.

Another photo is some man graduating from a college or university. There are some other family photographs & some appear to be very old.

Does any of this seem familiar to anyone? Or has anyone any ideas on how to trace the owners of these photographs?

Bump. She still has this in her possession and would love to find the rightful owners.

Did you think of contacting a radio station? it could be such a lovely story.

try KFM - local radio might be better than national. Or one of the local newspapers - the Leinster Leader or Liffey Champion.

What about finding the person that sold it at the car boot sale and asking where they got it. Maybe your friend did that at the time and got no leads.

Long shot but you hardly remember roughly what the person the album was bought from looked like.

Also maybe throw up some of the pics. I'm from caragh myself so maybe it was someone local selling it.

There's also a history group in caragh that could look into it if you could send pics

If there is a local archive society nearest/most local to Caragh they might be able to help.
Just see that suggested above. They may even have a Facebook page. Local archive society are great for this stuff. Hope they found their way home. Very good of your friend to hang onto them. Good luck.

Are there any landmarks in the photos? Might not originate in the area it was purchased?

If you can get the church identified in the wedding photo, go to them and see if you can get the register checked for marriages on that date. It would be a start at least!

bit out of the way but could be a lead

    31st August 2010
DEVANEY Stephen (Monkstown, Co. Dublin) - passed away on August 31, 2010 (peacefully) at home after a short illness. Beloved son of the late John and Ethna (formerly of Tower Hall, Killiney); he will be sadly missed by his sister Carole, his life long partner Shirley, his aunt Mabel Dolan and his cousins the Dolans of Skerries and all his many friends. May he rest in peace. Funeral tomorrow (Friday) after 10 o'c Mass in St. Patrick's Church, Monkstown to Shanganagh Cemetery.

This is the death notice of Ethna Devaney (nee Dolan)
DEVANEY (née Dolan) (Ethna) (Monkstown, Co. Dublin and formerly of Tower Hall, Killiney) - December 11, 2008 (peacefully), at home, beloved wife of the late John Devaney (Architect), dear mother of Stephen and Carole, sister of the late Kathleen McDonnell and the late Jim Dolan; she will be sadly missed by her son and daughter, extended family and friends. May she rest in peace. Funeral Mass tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10 o'clock in St. Patrick's Church, Monkstown followed by burial in Shanganagh Cemetery

I'd say the parish priest over there at Monkstown church Fr. Coady could help

Heres a pic or two of the church in Monkstown, is it it any of the pictures you have?

It seems that a Mary Ethna Dolan and a John J. Devaney got married between October and December of 1946 but in Dublin North so you could easily be onto something there!

As the Dolans were from Skerries then that would tie in there so perhaps if there's a church in the photo it's one in Skerries.

Either way, the parish priest in the place they are buried is probably the best place to start. Or try track down some Dolans in Skerries.

However there is the possibility that the person who was given the photo by the couple, and the person to whom the rest of the photos belong may not be known to either side of John and Ethna's family.

Thanks a million for all the really helpful replies. I'll pass them on to my friend. Hopefully the photo album will be reunited with its family :)
